Buying something isn't paying off a debt. If you're paying for services that have been performed (e.g. plumbing) then they have to accept cash, but a retail shop is not required to accept cash (unless there's a local bylaw requiring it; I believe that San Francisco has just passed one).

And there are some places that are starting to refuse cash for payments. Instead only allowing bank transfers. As a way of piggybacking off the banks AML systems.

Is it legal to refuse cash here? I think (don't know for certain) that this was tested in American courts. Does it not say on US currency 'legal tender for all debts, public and private'?

I think that you might only be forced to accept cash in some narrow situations. (where you are enforcing payment of a debt through the courts is the only example I can think of. But you would have to be mad to try and not accept cash from someone who you have taken to court for not paying money that they owe you)

The IRD definitely dont accept cash as a means of paying your taxes. Which has been in place for decades. And surely someone would have tried challenging them on that if it were possible to do so.

If you were living off the grid your wouldn't have to worry about the IRD! 😄

Yes its legal to not accept it. You only have to accept it for existing debts, at your business address during business hours.

No obligation to take it anywhere else, and if the customer has not bought something then they have no debt with you to settle.

Refusal to accept a cash payment is basically writing the debt off.
