Any chance of getting a few more details on GZ messages in the emailed notification beyond "There's a new message waiting for you at Geekzone", like the subject and perhaps the first line? At the moment there's no way to differentiate "Urgent fix for your networking outage" and "The punchline for that joke I started last month", i.e. "log in immediately even if you're at work" vs. "check it on the weekend when you've got some time to kill".

I toyed with that but there's a fine line between what we have now and putting part of the PM there and risking Google thinking the notification is spam...

Would Google really think it's spam? Even if Gmail does, all you need to do is whitelist it the one time it's tagged as such. In addition for my case, and probably a lot of others, I'm not using Gmail so it doesn't matter.

Sometimes a spammer hangs around on geekzone long enough. Tries a PM spam on a one to one basis over time. It seems like a real risk the sending address would be flagged on a match to something in the google dB.

Just takes one person to click report spam on the email they get with spam content in it and google would start to learn that its spam and then they all end up going in there. Without the PM content in it, then it is clear that its a geekzone message and not something else that people might read as spam and click the report spam button. You would think that geekzone users are smart enough to understand the difference but you would be suprised how dumb some people are about consequences when confrunted with something they dont want to read and a button to make it go away.

So Geekzone users are going to report email that Geekzone sends them as spam?

If that's the case then why isn't pretty much every single commercial organisation on the planet that sends its members email blocked by Google?

Personally I've always wanted the PM content to be in the notification email, but never got around to mentioning it 😂

Oh yes, they do. I monitor this via Google Postmaster tools and yes, people do click the "Spam" button. People do this when I send out an email with an invite to a Geekzone pizza, people do this to automatically file forums notifications away in the spam folder (instead of clicking the unsubscribe link) and so on.

We have more than 100,000 registered users so some of this behaviour will appear from time to time.

Other companies struggle with this too.

They do. Friends business sent out an email regarding service changes via their self hosted exchange server a couple of years back. That killed their ability to email to hotmail and some other, and made gmails go to spam for weeks.

Mailchimp exists for a reason but they were cheap and dont like spending money on online services.
