I have been looking at some third party solutions, or using one that is part of the original distribution of the platform used here. I don't like the original solution, and using third party is always a problem - reliability.

A chat room is a brilliant idea.

IRC is the best choice (IMHO) for resident Geeks, and people who can be bothered firing up a client, but remember all the non-geek visitors who may not have IRC installed.

What about IRC with a Java based interface for those who dont have/use IRC clients?

Scheduled (<<< took me five goes to spell that) chats on specific topics would be really neat, and I think it would be great to have a place to just 'hang out'.

Its fast, stable, reliable.
Simply ban bots, coloured text, autoreplies, auto greets, or scripts of any kind, and IRC is a good place to be...

IRC is good but not very user-friendly. I am planning to add something that can reside on a page - AJAX- or Java-based...

Perhaps we can put a link to some free IRC Chat application, if we're going to use IRC after all. Linux people can use "xchat" if they have xterm installed.

We'll never be too old to learn, and we learn at least one new thing every day.

That was my point in a round about way. AJAX would be brilliant. Having something built into the site saves us having to download a program. only needs to be a simple applet

There are plenty of java based IRC clients out there that can be embedded within a webpage.

The java clients make it easy for the non-geek and with the geeks it means we can use our favourite clients without being confined to a webpage.

IRC is a nice bandwidth light protocol. It already has plenty of options and when couplied with IRCd services (think Nickserv, Chanserv etc), it can be a lot more friendly. Do we really need to reinvent the wheel?

What is so wrong with progress? Instead of using an old obselete client how about a fresh new look that fits well with geekzone. That way it can be fully built to the needs of GZ without inheriting the problems and limitations of an exisiting program.

I'm sure Mauricio has nothing else to do anyway!!! Tongue firmly in cheek ;-)

Nothings wrong with progress, but we have a proven protocol that works fine. Hell, its probably possible to write a webbased client here I know there are PHP based IRC clients.

If we redo it, we probably will have either less features, bugs and possibly won't work with some browsers - ie the rich text editor doesn't like Opera that well.

Most of the java clients will allow you to modify the colour scheme so it fits the style of this site.

If you are referring to mIRC, then yes... it is ugly - but if you see the developments some of the Mac IRC clients have taken... IRC doesn't have to be ugly.

However mIRC or Xchat doesn't exactly have to be the client everyone uses, remember that IRC is just a protocol.

The java clients aren't really that bad unless you are trying to do DCC chats or DCC transfers... but they are fine for private messaging and regular chatting.

Ive only ever used mIRC and that really put me off the whole thing. Probably because i only used it to download less than legal content and found it so hard to use and with P2P programs becoming popular i was able to ditch it with a vengence. mIRC is just horrible, the whole look of it was cheap. For a site like this it needs a very stylish but clean look.

i found Pirch much nicer than Mirc on Windows. There are plenty of different clients out there (BltchX etc).
*Nix users probably have more choice in this regard, but I think IRC works well, and can have a Java interface for embedding in a webpage to serve up chat, and existing GZ ads for non-technical visitors. IRC will also handle high traffic really well.

Nothing wrong with progress, but the progression should be better, not just different :-)

Also, its not a democracy... Mauricio can rule with an iron fist if he wants, and us IRC advocates could be out of luck....
