I'd have thought any network would simply reference a GPS clock. Most accurate for price, and often co-located at sites it seems.

GPS is used for handover timing between sites.

GPS is used for frequency and time. A GPS NTP server will dish out time stamps but have nothing to do with the sync side of the network.

johnr: Grant it's not realted to " can't be bothered " as you put it, The feature was enabled for a short time frame a little while back but then had to be disabled due to a reason I can't say sorry

As advised above Vodafone NZ have paid for the feaure and would like it enabled

John, do you have any further updates on this now a significant amount of time has passed? Please refer to this Twitter conversation I had today with a Vodafone representative https://twitter.com/vodafoneNZ/status/421401220289675265

I currently have Nokia Lumia 925 which I'm having some crashing issues with, each time I soft reset it, the Date & Time gets reset. Because it doesn't support NTP & Vodafone doesn't support NITZ there is zero ability to sync the Date & Time automatically once the phone reboots.

Well the the handset has a issue and this should not happen cause of NITZ not enabled on the network,

The network is 100% ready for NITZ but the reason why it was enabled and then disabled I can't go into sorry and it's not network related,

John, I think what Ronny is saying is that its a pain in the arse having to reset his clock each time his phone crashes, not that the lack of NITZ is causing it.

Ronny does Winphone have an NTP app?

Windows Phone does not support NTP and apps aren't allowed to update date/time settings.

why is it crashing that causes you to have a softreset

that is the real problem here

lets work on addressing that

Really? Wow.

What does Set automatically on time do?

Or is Carrier Time separate to NTP?

It's a common problem with a lot of Lumias. You pick up the phone, it looks like the screen is off. So you press the power button to bring up the lock screen and nothing happens. The screen stays black. Although the phone is ON, it appears to be turned OFF. Only a soft reset will bring it back to life.

This should be discussed in a different thread. So agreed the main issue is the phone has an issue. But it's not being made any easier by Vodafone's lack of support for NITZ based on some issue only they seem to have an issue with, when the other carriers in this country don't.

So since switching back to Vodafone I've discovered they don't offer any Date/Time sync service for a phone they supply on their network, and that their coverage is inferior to Telecom's in and around Whangarei. I'm in a suburban area of Whangarei & officially Vodafone only has 1 bar of 3G to this and the surrounding properties. I used to be pro Vodafone.....

NITZ is time over the carrier network, i.e. Vodafone providing you the time.

NTP is over the IP network, so you would be querying a server over the Internet for the time.

Right well I have GDR3 & Nokia Black installed now. So lets see how the stability goes.

Then back on topic, christ knows why Microsoft haven't built in NTP as a core part of the OS?!?!?!
