antoniosk: You have a very forgiving wife there... jackhammers breaking concrete, front verge being dug up - and it looked like the copper was used as drawstrings but I'm probably wrong.

What I like is that you had simple conduit through your garage into your kitchen, with what looks like a crowbar to break through the wall.... none of this nonsense of connecting to your 'comms rooms' and such but actually a house like most  NZ'ers will have.

5 blokes though... yeouch.... good to know WXC will be absorbing all those costs on behalf of connecting customers for no term contract, such a noble company.....!

My Wife is awesome and my pride and joy next to our SIP Network Innocent

Yes I wanted to see this as pretty standard install and the guys in the roof found some mouse eaten cable as well, so if it was going to have an issue it happened here in a pretty standard house really, so lots of interesting info observed

Were just good guys all round Antonios you know that Wink

was there any particular reason you chose to bring the ONT all the way into your kitchen? i thought the "standard" install bought the fibre to the demarc the ONT was installed close to that inside then was distributed via cat 5/6 internally?

Yes Indeed I did , from here I feed a single cat 6 cable around my door frame to my SRP547 which sits on top of a cabinet in the corner from there it feeds to 3 switches around the house, pretty much out of the way for a house that doesn't have structured cabling... added the last 2 photos in to show that

aahh..I See - I thought a techo like you would have a small frame/cabinet in your garage for all that, then wireless in your roof space and the odd cat 5/6 pulled through for wired connectivity.

My wife would be having kittens (lots of them) with that cable going around the door frame like that :)

Nice photos and finally can put a face to the name. Just change that black beast in the garage to a Volvo. XC90 for the wife, S80 T6 for you.

You can never have enough Volvos!

Interesting to see. What ports are on the ONT? 4 ethernet and 2 VOIP?
It's a shame we can't view them at a higher res. Perhaps you could upload them somewhere else? www.imgur.com is quite nice in that it allows you to do a bulk upload, as well as allowing people to see the pictures at their full res without having to sign up.

How long did the splicing taking? In particular, how long did it take him to set up the fusion splicer?
I obviously know you aren't going to get any better than a fusion splice but is it really necessary? We use 3M mechanical splices often. It is a no polish system so takes a a lot of the 'hit and miss' away from what mechanical splicing used to be. We can get joints right down to 0.4db of loss. Compare this to the 0.1 accuracy of the fusion splicer and I think it is hard to justify setting up the splicer for one splice. Also means that every tech can carry a splice kit with them as opposed to having one guy being shot around jobs all day with his $20k plus of splicer.

So you're not using the ATA in the ONT ;)...

Nice photos.  I particularly liked that you got the deck chairs out and everyone had a chill in the middle of the day.

I think it's going to be an interesting ramp up once Chorus really start cracking into it, plus other LFC's when they start offering service in anger in the areas they won.

What speed does the fibre sync at? Have you noticed any midspan injection issues with it so far?

I just put a ZX Optic into our ADSL2+ router and I'm pretty sure it's syncing higher as a result, but look forward to plugging a 10Gb ZR into the Chorus stuff and "seeing what happens."

I see in the one picture that three of the five Chorus guys are standing with their hands in their pockets while the other two are actually doing work. I hope this install was not as standard as you alluded to :)

But on the same topic, clearly going forward these installed need to be carried out by fewer people or there is no chance this will be sustainable, or the waiting list to get connected will be several months long.

Can you think of any things which homeowners could do to speed up the process, and any parts which could have been improved now that you've observed it from start to finish?

Very interesting pictures, thanks for sharing them Phil.

In the shot titled 20120706_142602, I see a stack of white plastic things a little like strangely-shaped dinner plates, and I noticed that there are about 25 of them (presumably one per house). Each one looks like it carries two fibres -- one with a blue sheath and one with an orange sheath. Is this where the splice takes place for each house, or does it serve some other purpose?

Yes that's correct it has 4 x GB Ethernet one is used for the connection to the customers CPE and it has 2 pots ports if SP want to use the baseband service offered on the device, we wont be using this as it does not meet our requirements around SIP interoperability (I wont add what I actually think of this here I have already passed my comments back but they have to offer something apparently doesn't matter if it doesn't actually work with SP soft-switches), most providers will elect for a RGW (residential gateway) device any way.

Sorry Webshots was the only place I had to upload in bulk Laughing
I will upload a couple more photos for you showing the ports

Not long 5 minutes or so, it took 2 attempts as the unit does a quick stress test at the completion of the joint, the first one broke so another 5 minutes to do the second one, as to the method and the equipment they use I cant make a call on this as this is purely the service companies call and more of a question for them.

No as I just posted we will not be looking to ever use the Pots port on the ONT as t doesn't comply with our SIP interop.
I agree the ramp up is going to be interesting for the service companies when they have a commitment to a 4 day completion from date of order .... good luck with that Embarassed

speed fibre syncs at ??? not sure what yopur asking here muppet, the RGW plugs into the ethernet LAN of the ONT so it connects at 1Gb in my case as its a Ethernet connection, we have no visibility of the ONT connection at all

Your not going to be able to plug any gbic optics into your kit and plug it directly into the UFB fibre, UFB comes with a ONT your connection will be Ethernet

Actually the blokes doing the standing around was most likely myself and my Chorus Account manager and Service Delivery Manger who were there to observe the install only, we get to wear the vest as a health and safety issue and were not allowed to observe the work from close up with out this so it probably looks like a bunch of blokes sitting around doing nothing, the blokes actually doing the work did not do any standing around I can tell you.

The second part of your question is interesting, and really no easy answer as the home owner is not able to do much to assist apart from telling them where they want the ONT, this part of the work for me was pretty quick, but talking with the install guys it differs on a house by house basis and here is going to be the issue, every install is different, In my case the internal was easy but the lead in fibre was the drama due to broken draw wires , blocked trunking, this took the time to fix in this case several hours as holes were dug, paths ripped up, draw wires fixed etc.

In my case there were a few extra staff there as Visonstream like to send their managers out to the first install for each SP, as I said in the earlier post they themselves saw the issues and are acutely aware of the challenges they face and they know I think this type of install is not sustainable going forward once the orders start ramping up.
