I created a new .co.uk domain on Wednesday evening, set it up as a subdomain on my server, installed wordpress and set it all up with no problems, then changed wordpress to the main domain. Because the DNS records are still propagating when I go to the domain I saw the holding page by the registrar, as expected as it was only a couple of hours since the domain was created. I went to work the next day, the site works fine there, and in the UK.

At home today 36 hours after the domain was created the domain is still showing the holding page, on both computers. The curious thing is when I ping the domain it comes back with the correct IP. Even if I hard code the IP lookup in my hosts file the wrong web page is displayed. All local machines and devices have been rebooted to flush caches.

I suspect a TC cache issue. I'd rather not post the URL publicly, but does anyone have any thoughts, and can anyone from TC look into this for me? If I called the helpdesk with a DNS TTL or transparent cache query I suspect they'd ask me to reboot my router.

Are you running https on that server? That will bypass the TCL caches. (At least letting you narrow down the possibility of it being the cache)

I don't have https on that domain unfortunately. Is there another way to force a connection to bypass the cache? Even going to different URLs isn't making a difference, so I suspect it's not a page cache, that it's some kind of a DNS cache.

Mauricio tested this and is getting the same results, so I consider that confirmation that the issue is with Telstra Clear.

I imagine the issue will resolve itself eventually, but I'd rather it was resolved sooner than later. I can't work on the site while this problem's happening.

This is not a proxy problem. The TelstraClear DNS is resolving to the wrong IP, that's all.

If I enter the A record to other DNS they all respond consistently with a 96.125 address, TelstraClear returns a 208.78 address.

Using a VPN I can see the 96.125 address is correct.

You might have to contact TelstraClear support to clear this up.

That's funny, when I do a ping on my PC it resolves to the 96.125 address. I'm not there now though.

I think contacting regular support for this would be futile, this is more a second or third level support issue. I was hoping Gary could direct the request to the right team rather than me spending time on the phone.

Are there any mitigation options I could look at? Perhaps changing the TTL on the DNS would work, somehow force the update happen sooner? Then again TC has an existing TTL and probably wouldn't check, and I don't know how to do that anyway.

It's still happening, two days after the domain was registered. Does anyone know how to get TC to look into this, or mitigate it myself?

Given I've hard coded the DNS on my PC to direct requests for that domain to the right server, and that the wrong page is still coming up, i'm really not sure what to do.

Maybe. I suggest you make the call explain that you are a web developer with a technical problem relating to their servers and see if their escalation procedure works to get you to L3 in good time.

It came right this evening, 48 hours after I set up the domain. Because things weren't working properly last night I did update the name servers again, thinking it might flush it through, but it didn't.

As usual, the story with DNS is just be patient, and don't mess with stuff that you don't need to.
