Short story, Mum [70 Bless] just ported to Vodafone today and previously used clear.net.nz as her email provider and email address [Why?, because she is old and thinks that you have to use the email service that your internet provider gives you].

I am going to get her using Gmail if it kills me...or her but in the mean time.

Will Clear Net still allow her to use their SMTPservers for outgoing mail [incoming works fine] if she is no longer a customer and if so, how do I get her set up?

The Clear.Net web2mail portal is fine though but she prefers to use Outlook.

If their SMTP server supports sender authentication, then you should be fine. If not, then it's doubtful. IIRC I didn't have much luck with the same deal using a paradise.net.nz account which probably uses an alias of the same server. (Edit: Just tried connecting to Paradise's SMTP via a Telecom connection and no dice, so not really hopeful)

Or, setup a gmail account, get it to auto-pull emails from her Clear.Net address and setup the account on the phone with the Gmail account. As long as you can set the Reply-To address to the clear account, then it should be totally transparent to her.

Otherwise - does Vodafone's SMTP server require authentication?

I have yet to find an ISP outgoing email server that allows a connection other than through that ISP.  It's a constant bugbear when travelling

Set her up with a gmail account, do all sending receiving through googles servers (ssl, authentication, uses ports that aren't blocked by default like 465 unlike port 25) and configure gmail mail fetcher to pull her old email into the gmail inbox.

Thanks all, I will set her up on Gmail and set up the pop retrieval when I see her next month. She can make do with the web portal in the meantime.

I am connecting through vodafone 3G at the moment, and using the Clear Net email.
