Hi all,

I’m after a bit of advice and hoping this is the right place considering the problem.

I’m on Vodafone broadband however I've invested in the DrayTek + WNDR3800 (Gargoyle) combo that's ever so popular. I've got the router and modem up and working in bridge mode.

Where I'm having issues is simply getting the DrayTek to connect to the DSL line. Immediately after first unplugging my Vodafone-branded HG556 and plugging in the DrayTek it worked fine - Router providing PPPoE details to the Modem – no issues browsing the internet etc.

However from the next day onwards, it hasn't worked. The DSL light constantly flashes on the DrayTek – it just can’t seem to get a connection. Switching back to the HG556 – everything works fine. Even if the Router wasn’t providing the authentication details correctly – I’m guessing I should have a DSL line.

Tried the usual isolation tests to see if the DrayTek was sensitive to something the HG556 isn't - no luck.

From what I can see there could only be one of two things going on here;

1)      For whatever reason Vodafone only let their branded modem connect (I’ve tried giving the DrayTek the Voda’s MAC address – no luck),

2)      The DrayTek is faulty.

Anyone know if Vodafone do 1), or has any other ideas?

Thanks.

Hi jaysn

Have you tried using the HG55A modem again just to make sure the Draytek is not faulty?

Vodafone NZ don't lock other modems out from connecting,

FYI if you are going to use the HG55A again make sure it has the latest approved software on it

Thanks for the reply - good to know; yes I'm back using the HG556a and it works fine.

It's looking like a faulty modem at this stage then I guess - as improbable as it seems.

Draytek is very good gear but looks like the one you have could be faulty,

Update to the latest software on the HG55A and it will see you right

Tried resetting the Draytek to factory default settings?

1: Reset the Draytek to factory default then check the DSL settings, ensure that you have:

Encapsulation to PPPoA
Multiplexing to VC
VPI to 0
VCI to 100

Vodafone username and password

Don't enable the Draytek pppoe passthrough yet

2: See if it connects normally after this.

3: If that works enable passthrough following the settings below, note the part about leaving service name blank

Hi jaysn,

I'd suggest trying the "Alternative" firmware from http://www.draytek.net.nz/draytek/downloads/

This is tuned for the old Broadcom-based DSLAMs still used in rural areas and on Vodafone unbundled lines.
