A friend has a Sony XPERIA X10 Mini phone and is experiencing difficulties with sending text messages on the Vodafone network.

The problem is that, when she has completed writing a text message and hits the "send" button, a message comes up saying "could not send". So, a minute or so later, she hits "send" again and the message goes through straight away.

Now, the recipient of the text message receives the SECOND attempt straight away. But, here's the strange thing, about 24 hours later, the recipient receives the same message again, which is in fact the FIRST attempt at sending the message.

A Vodafone shop has inspected the phone's SIM card and advised the owner that the SIM card is working satisfactorily. Vodafone advised her to have the phone serviced by Sony as they consider that the fault is not caused by a problem with the Vodafone network.

Can you please advise us whether you think this is a Vodafone network fault or a phone fault. Have any Vodafone users experienced similar difficulties with sending text messages? Any advice on how to solve this problem would be appreciated.

Thanks very much for your help.

Regards
Fred

A) Not SIM card related SIM is used to ID a subscriber onto the mobile network

B) Same SIM card in another handset does the same issue happen?

Reading your post points to a handset issue

Thanks very much for your speedy reply. No, we have not tried the same SIM card in another handset. Is it possible that this "could not send" message might appear when the same SIM card is used in another handset?

Regards
Fred

I doubt the same issue will happen with same SIM card in another handset

If this was a network wide issue it would be major

Have you downloaded the Sony software that lets you update handsets from your pc?

How about a hard reset on the handset?

Thanks very much for your reply. I have just spoken with the lady who owns the phone and she explained that the people in the Vodafone shop did in fact put her SIM card in another handset in the shop. Apparently, this is how Vodafone concluded that the SIM card is working satisfactorily. I guess I could try the SIM card in my phone, which is also on the Vodafone network.

We just want to be sure that the phone really does need servicing before we take it into a repair place, because repairs these days can be very expensive!

Fred

Thanks a lot for the software update and hard reset suggestions. I think these are well worth a try, particularly if it's a phone software problem.
