Hi all,

For the past few weeks I have been trying to send an email to someone in Hong Kong.  I have been emailing them for the past couple of years with no problem, but for the past few weeks the emails have been failing. 

Not long after I send them I get the following errror message (see below).  I can send and receive emails to other people just fine.

I am using Vista, Outlook and my ISP is Telstra Clear (or Vodafone now?).

I'm not great with if anyone could decipher the error message and tell me what's wrong I would greatly appreciate it.

Does the problem lie with Outlook? Telstra Clear?  Or is the problem the recipient's email address?  I have tried emailing other people at the same company in Hong Kong and the same problem occurs - the email bounces back.

You shouldn't have put the actual email addresses....

The issue occurs to some senders when Sender ID filtering is enabled on the Microsoft Exchange 2003 SP2 server. MS Exchange checks the sender’s server address against a registered list of servers authorized by the domain owner to send email.'s being blocked.

Oh ok.  Thanks.  Is there any way to unblock it/solve the problem?

You have a SPF Record of text = "v=spf1 +a +mx -all"

(This is a SPF record.. not a SenderID but without going into it.. we will treat them the same)

it says email will ONLY be allowed to be accepted IF.

if comes from the A record (
the MX record (

As you are send via Clear's mail server and then they send it out.. the remote server it seeing it coming from Clear's mail server ( - in this instance..

So what can you do about it?

Fortunately DO have an SPF record.. so

change your SPF record to say:

v=spf1 +a +mx -all

This will include which says

v=spf1 ip4: ~all

which includes the IP Address their mail servers are in..

Thanks heaps.  How do I change the SPF record?  Sorry, I'm not very good with computers.

You should really talk to the person who set this up for you.

You may be sending out via clear but other people may not be so changing the SPF record may not fix the problem for everyone who is using the domain..

So (Ignore my last email) What you need to do it send out the mail OUT via the right mail server instead of

Normally you would use or as your outgoing mails server with SMTP Authentication with your username/password that you use to pick email up but every system is different so you should talk to the person who looks after your email.

I am assuming that you are sending e-mail from domain,
This domains nameserver is with So you need to either log into your management panel at MediaTemple and edit the DNS zone there OR contact them and have them apply the change for you on your behalf.

The SPF record needs to be changed on the DNS zone file where the name server is pointed to.

Good to see more providers actually using the SPF records. This should have all been set up by whoever maintains your domain name however.
