Hi all,

Following the Chorus release yesterday; does this mean that VF will start to offer VDSL packages? If so, I'd certainly be keen if the limits are good.

I'm also interested to understand how quickly VDSL performance degrades the further you are from an exchange. It's worse than ADSL - is that correct?

Thanks,

Matt

Yes. VDSL2 range is around 800m from an ISAM to meet Chorus install guidelines.  Beyond that it degrades very quickly. Range however will depend on copper size.

If you're cabinetised (roughly 50% of lines in NZ) there is a relatively good chance you're within VDSL2 coverage. If you're served from an exchange you'll need to be close to the exchange.

VDSL2 isn't a mass market offering like ADSL2+ so don't expect every ISP to launch services. The fact it requires perfect wiring (mandatory master filter install or dedicated jackpoint) means it should never be marked as a DIY install.

I would love to see a vf vdsl service. I have pretty much all my services with vf and it would be a pain to change providers. UFB is not at our place until 2015 or 2016 so it would be great to improve the upload speeds in the interim.

My views (except when I am looking out their windows) are not those of my employer.

We're in the same situation - no ETA on UFB. I would consider a jump to Telecom if there is no (or not as good) VF VDSL package.
