Both ping & tracert complete but I don't really know much about reading tracerts apart from seeing some timeouts.
Going back through some other threads here I see references to proxy server issues causing similar problems for people.

You can connect to the server, so the problem's at a higher layer. Not really sure what it is though.

A bit late to the party, but are you still having problems? Seems to hit the local cache now

tracepath static2.stuff.co.nz

1: router 0.937ms
1: router 0.900ms
2: no reply

Though my responses from hop 3 fluctuate like mental

Ok, I figured it out. I have my router set up to use TC DNS servers, but I had my PC looking directly at google 's DNS - 8.8.8.8. I remember doing this when Astrill's old version messed up my DNS settings and never putting it back.

So totally my fault. Google's DNS rightly pointed me at a US Akami mirror. Doh. TC/Vodafone and stuff are working properly in this instance.

Though TC isn't perfect... it still routes to the Sydney Cloudflare data center via Sydney, then Singapore, then Sydney.

try hola unblocker.  they have an australian proxy server, as long as you have good connection to them it should stay in australia.  i tried it on speedtest.net before and got line rate.

I have Astrill. The point is I have a website that's hosted in the US with a CDN node in Sydney, and TC/VF customers don't use the proxy because of poor routing. That means my website (and GZ) go slower for those customers.

You've made the assumption that the internet always should provide the quickest path, when in reality, in general the internet in connected by the least networks hops and most favorable commercials.

The 'problem' you see may well be simply by design, and could be totally out of the control of your ISP.

Sure but my packet hits Sydney, then Singapore, then Sydney... that's hardly smart routing, it's not fast, and probably isn't low cost.

i think the hola proxy is in melbourne, adelaide, brisbane or something.. but it still seems to give good speeds.

lots of australian domestic routing is broken, it's normal.
