Hi there,

I've just got a new TV for a room that used to have TC cable TV (with digital STB). We've since gotten rid of the STB but I'm wondering if I can use the cable to get FTA channels on the TV.

The thing is I've tried, but perhaps I'm doing something wrong. I've plugged the cable directly into the TV (it once went to a splitter, then to a modem for STB and the STB itself) and started the tuning (digital and analogue from what I can tell) but it finished with no channels.

I don't know if the analogue switch off if that would've effected the FTA channels on the cable, I assume not as VF would have their own source coming over the cable.

Does anyone know if (providing it's connected at the box outside the house) I should still be able to do this? And if I manage to, are there any issues (I've read about certain things that lead to degrading the local signal quality.....injecting noise and interference etc...?

Cheers,

Nick

No you can't do that.
Fta tv requires a cable running to a UHF aerial, which would normally be on the roof, so using a cable that ran to a splitter and modem/router won't work.

Just to confirm, the cable that came into the room went to a decoder then to TV. Am I thinking of the really old days before digital TV?......perhaps I am http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=44&topicid=6629

There are no FTA channels on cable. Everything is digital and encrypted.

There used to be analogue FTA channels broadcast unencrypted on the cable network however these were shut down many years ago when cable moved fully to digital.

It's also in breach of the terms and conditions to hook the cable up to an unapproved device, and you will be hunted down if you ingress noise back into the network that could affect other customers!

- do you have a satelite dish or tv aerial on your house at all?
- could you potentially try a pair of rabbit ears? (dont go and buy...just borrow).
