This is one for maverick. In response to another thread, you mentioned that a Fax Mailbox service would be available sometime this year. Any update on when we might see this? :)

I would be keen on that service as well.

At present I have to use a Fax Mailbox in the USA to receive faxes. It would be nice to have a local fax number...

A new release of our back end software will support this, we haven't decided when we will go o this release as it has a large impact on backend services, we are still expecting it to be around 4th quarter though

My fax machine is dead, I would like a service to get a fax number and have it delivered to a email address and a way of sending out with the correct caller ID. If that can be added for a few bucks a month then I would be keen on it since some technologically challenged people still cant handle the scan and email concept.

The company I work at is one of the 10 largest exporting manufacturers in New Zealand, our purchasing department also can not scan and e-mail. They print out orders and feed it into a fax machine which is even worse than not being able to scan, because we have free software (PrimoPDF) which is a virtual printer and creates a PDF so you don't even have to scan it!

So on the side, if anyone want to create PDFs for free I can recommend PrimoPDF. Just Google for it.

I run my own Hylafax server ( dedicated linux box ) that receives faxes, ocrs them and sends me the results.

On the other hand, not having to run a server would be good too if someone provided the service for me.

I think I'll give Kiwifax (www.kiwifax.co.nz) a try until WorldxChange launch their product, as none of the other providers seem to have local numbers outside of Auckland.

Kiwifax seems quite expensive:

Have a look at http://www.faxaway.com/

You can get a fax number for US$1 per month, with no per page charges at all.

The only drawback is that your fax number is in the USA. However, it only costs 15c per page approx. to send a fax to the USA, so that is much the same as Kiwi Fax.

You save on the monthly charge being $1.37 per month instead of $9.95 per month.

Just a thought...

Yeah, but you will also need a NZ number to forward over to the US, and then there is the issue that the faxes ID will not match the number that people are sending to either which tends to alarm some people.

Why bother?

Just get people to send faxes directly to the US number. As I said, it only costs 15c per page, which is about the same as sending to another NZ city outside your local calling area.

I think most of their business is made up of people who do bulk faxouts within the US.

However, for me it's a bargain to have a fax mailbox at only US$1 per month, and I have been using this service for over a year now, so I can vouch for the fact that it's very reliable.

As C.diddy has commented, the drawback is that it's not a local number which may cause problems for some people. Personally, I don't find it to be a problem, but if WxC start offering a fax mailbox for a similar price, as an adjunct to a VFX number, well of course it would make sense to go for that option instead.
