New to this whole ADSL thing, so forgive me if this is something obvious. We've got a Vodafone Station that will give me generally around 350-400+ KB/s download and 80ish KB/s upload most of the time. However, after 24-36 hours, the speed will drop down to something closer to 300ish KB/s download and 20-30(!) KB/s upload. When I reboot the router, it goes completely back to normal.

Took these two speedtests not long ago which shows the behaviour:

The vodafone station's config page also shows the changes under it's connection details (from 0.26Mb/s or so to 1.02Mb/s upload).

- Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL)

 


 

- Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin)

 


 

- Your general location (or street)

 


 

- If you are rural or urban

 


 

- If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin

 


 

- If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service

 


 

- If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

 



 

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

 



 

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

Can you post your modem line stats - DSL sync rate, attenuation, noise margin. Should be in the modem's status page.

These silly Vodafone Stations don't provide the line stats to the user, I have one and it's such a pain! Maybe Johnr could look find them? I had to contact Vodafone to get a copy of my line stats.

Thanks :) Been a lurker for a while, about time I made an account.

The modem page is pretty barebone unfortunately, can't find any useful details.

Well that makes that a little difficult then ;-)

Does the OP have another modem available for testing?

Sounds like the noise margins are creeping up or the modem resyncs at a lower rate for stability.

Just to update anyone who sees this in the future or has the same problem - TimA updated my firmware to 5.4.8.1.160.6.35 and it seems perfectly fine ever since :-)

Thank you, I just saw it!  My family has what I was told is a Vodafone station though it calls itself "Vodafone DSL Router", and it's unstable at times.  I called Vodafone service and after a 45 minute and the rep insisted it was a wifi reception problem (despite my desktop being wired, and failing to connect to anything, including the modem/router's page itself) so I had to try moving the cordless (I turned it off), changing the channel (already did that), moving wireless devices closer, etc.  My subsequent attempts to call Vodafone have failed.

I would be very interested in a firmware upgrade if one is available.  The box arrived already configured, but was a little 'soiled' (dust and splashes of something unidentified) so clearly wasn't new.

The troubleshooting box diagnostics screen says:

Product name     EchoLife  HG556a
Software version     V100R001C12B037
Serial number     307041008018040

TIA for any response.

Sorry to revive an old thread, but our ADSL download speed has dropped again. The vodafone station reports it at 2.4Mb/s (compared to usually around 4Mb/s) and a speedtest gives around 250-270KB/s. Restarted modem several times. Could someone from Vodafone take a look? Not keen to wait forever on the phone.
