HUAWEI Mobile connect card, E618.
New Dell latitude D830 laptop running windows XP.

The card worked fine in the older Dell laptop but in this one the PC freezes as soon as the card is plugged in. There isn't the opportunity to install drivers or anything, as the machine stops.
I don't suppose anyone can offer any advice, could they ?

Thats my next thing to try.
I need to try & locate an update for the card driver. There isn't anything useful on the dell website so its off to the internet for a search around. Currently its using a microsoft driver so there is a good chance a different version exists

Did you install the software (which I believe includes the drivers) before inserting the card?

On the odd occasion where I haven't followed this rule, everything goes wrong and I've found that I have to:

(1) Go to Device Manager
(2) Locate the "bad" device (probably got a ? beside it)
If you can't see it, try going up to the "View" menu option and select "Show hidden devices"
(3) Delete the "bad" device

Then reboot, install the software/drivers and then everything works ok.

I did thanks, it gets to the point where it says "Install the card", after which the machine hangs. It also does the same thing if you just put the card in.

Not so far.
There aren't any more recent drivers for the pcmcia slot, so I'm not sure what to do next.

I guess the card goes back to vodafone and we try something different instead

Should you not be returning the laptop and saying the card works in other laptops?

Possibly, although a properly manufactured card should work in any PC.
You could argue all day with that one, and I suspect its exactly the kind of "help" we would get if we tried the helpdesk.
