Noviota: What I'd like to know is if you get a publicly routable IP address, rather than the silly 10.x.x.x I get using GPRS on my current phone.

Also how well vodems work with linux.

I have not setup a Vodem in Linux myself, but the support is built into the kernel of any modern distrobution, no driver download neccesary.

It works as a generic USB serial device. ie /dev/ttyUSB0 and from there you use it like a dialup modem, except dialing with ATD*99#, i think.

You don't get a RFC1918 address unless you're using the www APN, change APN to 'Internet' for a publically routable IP address.

Yes all 3G sites are WCDMA/HSDPA

Grant17:
alasta: In another recent thread I seem to recall Johnr saying that HSDPA coverage is now the same as regular 3G UMTS coverage.

Which means that it is STILL ABYSMAL Yell

3G has only very limited coverage compared to EVDO.

To prove my point, click here:

http://www.vodafone.co.nz/personal/coverage-and-roaming/nz-coverage-maps/broadband/index.jsp?area=auckland

A helluva lot of the newer -- and even some older -- suburbs around Auckland are still not covered.

The info on that page is out of date

Current 3G WCDMA/HSDPA coverage starts from Drury and goes all the way to Hibiscus Coast out to Gulf Harbour silverdale Orewa

Pukekohe township and race track is also fully covered

There are towns not in the drop down box but when you click on them show the 3G WCDMA/HSDPA coverage IE Gisborne

OK, thanks John.  I stand corrected.  It's good to hear that substantial progress has been made in extending 3G coverage.

It would be nice if someone updated the website one day Smile
