As some of you may be aware, I currently have a Vodem which has given me nothing but grief since the day I got it. Having tried every conceivable option to resolve my problems I've finally decided that I've had enough and I'm considering buying an HSDPA handset to replace both the Vodem and my aging Nokia 6630.

I'd be curious to hear any feedback from anyone who regularly uses an HSDPA handset to connect to the Internet. I realise that there may be some convenience issues, such as having to regularly charge the handset, but my main priority is to get a solution that is reliable. Unfortunately a data card is out of the question due to their cost and type of computer hardware that I plan on using.

The options that I'm looking at are the Motorola V3xx and the Nokia N95. The V3xx is $599 and I understand that the N95 will be available for $999 as of next week. Whilst most here would probably consider the N95 to offer better bang-for-buck I don't really want to spend any more than I have to and I feel that I would rarely make use of the N95's bells and whistles.

Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated.

Have you tried using a Datacard rather than a the Vodem, if not then perhaps this might help?

As for HSDPA phones, I have heard the Motorola V6 Maxx is quite good & supports up to 3.6Mbit I think.

I have had no problems with the V3xx, the HSDPA is great and the phone's form factor is very nice.

But then the N95 has a number of great features like 5mp camera and GPS.

When it works, it's great, awesome speeds, the trouble is it does not work more often than it does (did)

The n95 worked well but it did seem to do an awful lof of jumping between GPRS, UMTS and HSDPA.

Mobile internet over cellular is a bit of a flop I believe now, the systems are just simply too unreliable.

As mentioned above, a data card is not a feasible solution as I need a data device that will connect via USB or bluetooth. I also want to try and use this as an opportunity to upgrade my aging handset, as buying a data card now and then buying a new handset in a few months' time would blow the budget.

Thanks, that's good to know. The V3xx's snazzy appearance definitely appeals to me.

But then the N95 has a number of great features like 5mp camera and GPS.

I wouldn't use the camera on the phone, as I prefer to use a 'real' camera. The GPS and FM radio would be nice, but I can live without them.

I currently live in an area with good reception and haven't really experienced this with the Vodem, but I could live with it anyway provided that the handovers occur smoothly without causing the connection to drop or freeze.
