And the cat came back ...

Island Bay, "100/10 Mbps" cable, tested via Ethernet:

After a great week free of congestion, late evening speeds have been plummeting again.
Latency and upstream speeds always remain normal.
Downstream speeds are in the high 90s all day, then quite suddenly crash to the 30s and 40s after 9pm:

I hope that this is not the shape of things to come ...

As johnr as pointed out in past posts, have you tried on other speedtest servers too to reduce the change that its a saturated speedtest link causing the apparent slowness from that result? (Just asking as it sounds like a plausible theory that in some cases, not all, its actually the speedtest misrepresenting thing)

I want to believe this theory smile

It's a much nicer prospect than the cable network turning to custard again.

Tomorrow I will test against both the VF and Spark servers all day, local and overseas.

Off-peak "Spark speeds" have matched "VF speeds" in the recent past.

It's too late to test tonight because my measured speeds have now returned to "normal" after 10:30pm, as they usually do.

Skillie: Not sure if this is a problem - getting a higher ping on 130/10 in Kapiti after the upgrade too...

I've never seen higher than about 95Mb/s on my 130/10 connection recently so I would be happy with this.   I am pretty sure when I first switched back to cable I saw > 100Mbs so it's not my TP Link router that is the bottleneck. And all my PC's are on GBE.

What type of cable modem do you have?
Your speed is typical of a 100Mb/s Ethernet interface.  If you have a Cisco cable modem and the link light is amber, then your router is connecting at 100Mb/s.  If the link light is green, then it has a 1000Mb/s Ethernet connection.
Have you tried taking your TP-Llink out of the picture and doing a direct connection between the cable modem and your PC/laptop to see what you get?
Another thing to check with your TP-Link, if it capable of setting the Ethernet link speed, make sure it it set to Autonegotiate

That's weird because my link light is amber but my TP Link router TL-WR2543ND is supposed to be Gigabit and auto negotiate.

Is your TP-Link using the latest FW? http://www.tp-link.com/en/download/TL-WR2543ND.html

What do you get with a direct connect to the Cisco modem from your PC/laptop?

Two nights ago I reported a severe real or apparent speed dip during peak hours.
Island Bay, 100/10Mbps cable, tested Ethernet to modem.
It was suggested that this may be an artifact due to recently-reported congestion of the VF speed server.

The problem:

VF Wellington speed tests (www.speedtest.net) dip suddenly after 9pm and improve suddenly by 10:30pm

Testing yesterday:

Tested 4 cities (Wellington, Auckland, Sydney, Melbourne) at regular intervals over 12 hours, testing in 3 or more different ways:

1. using the "congested" local Wellington VF speed test server
2. using another ISP's speed test server (Spark in NZ, Telstra in Australia)
3. also using nPerf for Sydney and Melbourne
4. test downloads (offshore)

Results:

Off-peak:

All speed measurements are approximately the same, regardless of how they are tested. Typically 100/10Mbps in all 4 centres.  Excellent real-world performance.

Peak hours:

As before, downstream speed tests suddenly "crashed" to the 30s between 9pm and 10pm. Good speeds were restored by 10:30pm.

Wellington VF server:

Wellington Spark server:

A real downstream speed dip down to the 30s - 40s between 9 and 10pm - as measured by multiple tests on all speed servers, local and offshore, and by a timed download.

During the dip:

Offshore speeds were faster than Wellington speeds
Auckland speeds were faster than Wellington speeds
nPerf speeds were faster than OOKLA speeds (offshore)
Vodafone speeds were slightly FASTER than Spark   <<<
Upstream speeds and latency remained normal throughout.

So I appear to have an excellent cable connection 23 hours per day.  undecided

Getting good speeds (testing on wifi) but Netflix failing to load as is twitch, seeming like congestion.

This is far from fixed. I'm just entirely way too exhausted to continue complaining, almost a year down the road.

I think I'll talk to my flatmates about switching over to VDSL or something. :\

Mind you, this is just after 10 PM, or an hour after absolute peak. It's been much worse.

We also got a refund. We got a "whopping" $50. If we'd have just switched providers, we'd have simultaneously saved on money and on frustration.

Not quite fixed yet undecided

Island Bay 100/10 cable

Good off-peak performance, but a consistent downstream speed dip (30s to 50s) from 9pm to 10pm for the last 5 nights.

Upstream speeds and latency remain normal.

Vodafone Wellington server:

Spark Wellington server:

EDIT: long (30+seconds) page loading times on Geekzone tonight - makes posting difficult.

I wonder if it's just a matter of Island Bay having its own separate problem again or something.

How's it looking for people in other areas? It's been quiet here!

I would guess for the majority of people it's all sorted now, but there will still be some experiencing issues. Which would help explain why the thread is a little quiet lately.

While my speeds say I am at full speed I still have shocking performance most nights on Netflix. Also the delay in loading some pages as talked about on the other thread.
