Hi All,

I have this really random issue where if I visit speedtest.net and run a speedtest, my entire vodafone broadband connection drops. The connection will not recover unless I restart the modem.

Video screen recording here. https://vid.me/4PaU

I am on a Vodafone ADSL connection using a Vodafone Station. I've called Vodafone technical support, and every time I call, I get a different response (Ranging from no issues, to they've contacted the fault reporting team).

Any idea why it's doing this? All I wanted to do was run a speed test...

EDIT (To please the robot):
- Vodafone ADSL 2+ Connection
- Vodafone Station
- No changes to the modem, except allocating static IP address for Raspberry Pi devices
- I live about 400m from an exchange
- My house is relatively new and the wiring is decent. Get about 14mbps ADSL speeds consistently.

Hello... Our robot found some keywords in your post, so here is an automated reply with some important things to note regarding broadband speeds.

If you are posting regarding DSL speeds please check that

- you have reset your modem and router

- your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing

- you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap

- your tests are always done on an ethernet connection to the router - do not use wireless for testing

- you read this topic and follow the instructions there.

Make sure you provide information for other users to help you. If you have not already done it, please EDIT your post and add this now:

- Your ISP and plan

- Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL)

- Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin)

- Your general location (or street)

- If you are rural or urban

- If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin

- If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service

- If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

I recommend you read these two blog posts:

- Is your premises phone wiring impacting your broadband performance? (very technical)

- Are you receiving a substandard ULL ADSL2+ connection from your ISP?

Hey Dylan, already have. Same problem occurs on my laptop, surface and desktop PC. Consistent issue across Firefox and Edge.

I don't think it's a device/browser specific issue, as once the internet goes down, nobody in the household can get connected.

Do you get this with anything else?

Your setup seems to be toyed with a tad there, the lack of ads im assuming you have messed with you hosts file there, 1ms over adsl seems unlikely too.

tried borrowing another modem and testing through that?

I don't have another modem on me, but yes, I have blocked a list of ad providers in my hosts file.

I do get disconnections occasionally, but usually don't give it a second thought and just restart the modem (thinking it's just Vodafone's service). It was only recently I noticed that speedtest.net was consistently crashing my internet.

Just cause its a new house does not mean the wiring is good but this is very odd indeed,

Are you in VDSL coverage?

speedtest.net is riddled with in-your-face advertising, which I cannot tolerate.
I use Firefox with AdBlock Plus, which kills all advertising but not my modem.

Why not return to a default hosts file on a trial basis?

A move to VDSL will get you a different modem and faster speed and a master filter install

Back to the issue.
Try running it on another PC with that PC turned off. You have not moved the DHCP server to your PC with the changed host file or anything random?

Would definitely recommend. It's better for many reasons.

Same issues when I use default hosts file. Really weird problem. I wonder if the packets SpeedTest sends has anything to do with it?

One thing I do notice now is that ping is 29 - 30ms, and not the random 1ms I was getting.

I will be upgrading to VDSL end of this month when my ADSL contract ends. Tossing up between Vodafone and 2Degrees right now. The last time I called up Vodafone, they wanted me to pay an extra $99 for a new modem since I'm an existing customer and I'm on a 12 month ADSL contract :(
