jayj: ...
One thing I do notice now is that ping is 29 - 30ms, and not the random 1ms I was getting. ...

1ms sounds much too good to be true for an ADSL connection (unless you live next door to the exchange).
Something fishy here  undecided

Weeeeird, the problem appears to have fixed itself. When I go to speedtest.net and run the test, my internet doesn't crash.

However, I have discovered that disabling ads on speedtest.net causes the 1ms to occur, enabling ads gives a ping rate of 30ms.

But now regardless of whether I disable or enable ads, the internet isn't crashing.

With adblock enabled

Without Adblock enabled

Don't know whats happened to the speeds though. Everyone must be online...

johnr:
jayj: Yes, my house has the option of VDSL. No Fibre yet though.

A move to VDSL will get you a different modem and faster speed and a master filter install

I wish... called up Vodafone today to switch to VDSL. They wanted to charge me $99 because I have an existing ADSL modem (I joined Vodafone this time last year). Needless to say, Spark is offering a free modem, same VDSL pricing and a $110 welcome credit. Convenient timing considering my 12 month contract ends next week.

Tried to explain that I'm happy to go on another 12 month contract for the VDSL modem, but they didn't bite. Can't understand the logic of that, especially when the offer I'm asking for is available to new customers :(

Are Spark offering a master filter / proper VDSL install?  They don't mention one in their offer summary, which surprises me.

DO NOT get VDSL without a master filter.

I found it here http://www.spark.co.nz/shop/internet - if you enter your address it's mentioned at the bottom of the page.

yep :)

Is it easy to install VDSL and how much does it cost?

It’s super easy! When you order VDSL you can let us know the date and time you'd like to have it connected. It will require a technician to visit your property to install a master splitter and new master jack point in your home. Don’t worry – it may sound complicated but it’s not and should only take 1-2 hours. You’ll need to be at home during this time to make sure you’re happy with what’s going on.

We have a range of VDSL plans and when you sign up to a 12 month contract standard installation and a top-spec modem is free too.

All done! Signed up to Spark VDSL online. My Vodafone contract ends on the 24th Sept and I've requested a connection on the 25th or 28th Sept. Also told Vodafone to end my broadband/homeline after the contract. Fingers crossed things go smoothly.

Haven't really looked at my Vodafone invoices, but looking at it now, they were going to increase the price of my ADSL connection from $84 to $89 at the end of this month anyway, so no loss switching to VDSL for me.

My only concern is Spark switching me over before the end of the Vodafone contract, but I assume they're smart enough to read my notes.

Don't tell Vodafone to end your connection - the Gaining Service Provider (Spark, in this case) does that. There is chance now that your service may be cut off early.

I told Vodafone to end if after the contract though? No internet for a few days isn't an issue for me as I won't be home around that time (except to supervise the VDSL install). Is this more serious than that?
