Well my account was activated today.

I thought i'd sign up to vfx just to see how it goes, i want to look at moving over to fusion if things go well.

My setup is:
Currently on a 256K plan with slingshot. (moving to a full speed plan soon)
Self install, 3 dynalink filters in a one year old house. (rental)
Linksys WAG54GP2v2 router (just moved from a Dlink)

I've been playing all afternoon and am impressed with the service. Call quality is good. The web portal is excellent, and I love all the features.

I'd be quite happy to move over to fusion if it worked this great all the time...

At this stage though I don't think I can. My DSL connection has never been great. It was the same at my old house. Since I have been keeping an eye on it this afternoon my DSL line has dropped off about 8 times. Today may be a bad day or maybe its always like this and I never notice it. Its even disconnected while I'm typing this.

The connection has dropped off while I was talking to a friend, and of course I lost the call.

Am I right in saying that since the DSL line is dropping off it isn't really going to matter what provider I'm with? I had the same problem at my old house over several years and several providers (full adsl install). I would have 2 months of connections dropping off about every half an hour ish (or less), then it would be fine for 3 months. Then back to bad service.. Couldn't put it down to the weather or anything. Technicians came out several times and could never find any problems.

Now I am in a brand new house with new wiring and going through the same thing. Are the exchanges just rubbish?

Maverick can you see any logs at your end as to how often the Voip line is reconnecting? The router doesn't really show anything.

Going full install isn't really an option in a rental. I have thought about pulling all the phones out and filters and just running the router by itself for a day or so (with no filter) but currently do not really have any way logging uptime.

I know I am not currently on xnet broadband but has anyone got any recomendations on what I can do?

I want to go naked DSL and xnet currently looks like the best option. I'm sick of useless broadband and don't want to pay telecom another cent. Am I still going to be cursed with bad internet because telecoms exchanges?

First question would be what Modulation is set on your router ? check that first should be g.dmt.

Second as your not with us I can't help at all sorry, we will have no visability at all of your connection, all we would see is what happens with the call when your connection drops and this will just show up as a unresponsive endpoint, ie the messaging stops working, the Box will phone home every 3 minutes anyway to update it's location ie if you drop off and reconnect you may get a new IP address so this will update our system.

My advice is 1 check with your current provider and get them to chase up or 2 and the far far better option....Move to us to get a Xnet connection

Free VOIP traffic as well and we will have better visability of your connection, sorry had to get a plug in.

Reallly DSL does drop off occassionaly as we all know but generally connections should be pretty reliable but if your connection is currently dropping off that many times there is a problem , no Exchanges are not useless and the issue could be a number of things, possibly it could be your on a bad port, could also be your router setup ( check the modulation) also try just the router plugged in as you suggested just in case it's a bad filter / phone in the house, anyway your current ISP will have what they call Radius logs of your DSL connection this records all the activity of your DSL link when it starts up when it drops, they should see when your connectiuon is dropping and should be able to get the line looked at if they see a problem.

I just set up a Linksys WAG54GP2v2 with Xnet Fusion and had similar issues with the DSL line dropping. I resolved this by (a) flashing the firmware to the latest version on the Linksys website and (b) changing the modulation from "multimode" to "G.DMT".

The connection is now pretty rock solid and I haven't had any issues with VFX calls being dropped since then.

Just a note, the current version is 2.01.06 and will be automatically applied to all VFX users when they they first connect

My modulation is currently set on multimode. I will change it to "G.DMT". At least this is one thing that might improve the connection. Firmware looks like its in the latest version. I suddenly had a few extra menu's after vfx set itself up.

I'll see how it goes over the next few days. might give slingshot a call and see if they can shed any light on things.

Run it for a few days on that modulation first before you give them a call, I think you will find that may actually be the cause.

I would advise asking them to look at your noise margin (you can look at this in your router interface as well). We have seen numerous issues recently with noise margin problems resulting in numerous disconnections. If your noise margin is a little low (10dB or below) they can contact Telecom Wholesale and request an increased noise margin profile (depending on the equipment you are connected to).

This will usually stablise things and result in a rock solid connection (Note this slighty decreases your sync speeds), however your problem could be related to something else altogether - worth a shot though.

I had noise margin fine and then radnomly dropping to below 7 before disconnecting. This was during the period that my exchange was upgrade to ADSL2+ and the few weeks commissioning period after the upgrade, then suddenly everything was stabe. Check if your exchange is being upgraded, that will explain it.

Hi Guys

Since changing the option in the router and running with no phones or filters connected nothing has changed.

I've rung my ISP and they have logged it with telecom.

The connection actually failed several times while on hold and while talking to them.

I sat there writing them down as it happened. They could see them all in there log.

Is this frequent enough?

It will be your connection since you have since this with 2 different routers, yes your right hard to talk on the phone when that happens, your ISP should be on to it though now you have logged a fault.
