Anybody else get this? Every time I pay my monthly bill (Red+ essentials) it generates 3 other charges on my Visa.

 

2x $1 charges and 1x $3.64 Card convenience charge.

 

 

 

Obviously the 'card convenience' charge is there to punish me for the convenience of paying with a card?

 

I cannot fathom why there are the other two $1 charges?

It's not a charge of $1 but hold and it will drop off after a few days

I can understand doing this for a new credit card, but every single month for the same card, it's FITH.

Is that why there were two? The first one was me registering my new VISA on the site, the second was using that VISA for the first time?

 

Anyway thanks for the explanation, saved me trawling on the website or calling support, much appreciated.

 

 

 

Also "so we run check your credit card is valid" from that support page... Made my head hurt :)

I have said it a few years back: the $1 authorisation is not needed. If the system charges the correct amount and the credit card processor denies the charge then it's the end of the story. Charging the $1 authorisation just to confirm the card is a waste - two transactions when it could be done in one.

 

Same thing applies to database design. If you have a key that doesn't allow duplicates, just write the record - if it fails with duplicates then continue down one path, if it doesn't fail then continue down the other path. Better than overloading the system with a read first just to see if the record already exists.

 

In other words: do more with less folks.

Hold for what? $1 doesn't cover the full charges and doesn't do anything good. Read my comment above.

If you register the card in My Vodafone then it does not do the $1 pre auth each payment

I know. But it's a pre-auth. Usually petrol stations do this to secure funds since the total to be charged is not known when someone swipes the card before the pump is activated - and they want to be sure to have a way to charge in case someone does a runner. Also the petrol stations will put a hold of $100 or more. Hotels do the same when you check-in.

 

This is not the case with Vodafone. The amount is known, so a pre-auth of $1 is useless for all purposes.

This is my point.

Wouldn't surprise me to find it's one Vf billing system putting a charge against another Vf billing system..... because........

Just a note on the hotels recently the hotels I have stayed at are only doing a pre-authorisation for $1.

 

This was for Rydges in Auckland and Rendezvous in Melbourne most recently.

If you have a company charge then that's the process. If you are paying directly they usually put a pre-auth of a couple of hundred dollars. The last one I stayed at asked for $200.

The problem with pre-auth's now is that the moves by banks to offer real time banking means people are now actually seeing them as previously they'd only affect your available balance. When I'd check into a hotel previously I'd never see these on my account because they'd drop off before the transactions were updated a day or two later. With ANZ now moving to realtime you can log into internet banking or the app and see all of these.

 

I wonder how many extra queries the banks are getting as a result?

The problem with pre-auth is that in this specific Vodafone situation it serves no real purpose.

It can only be justified when registering the card for automatic payment, not the for on demand payment.
