With the Vodafone traditional cable, they provided a Netcomm n300 router, seemingly as a gift because they didn't ask for it back when i changed over to fibre-x. Not a bad little unit, although still can't compete with my ubiquiti routers.

With the FibreX, considering their external access to it, and the vodafone branding, everything would point to the HG659 been leased CPE (same deal as with the modems), but I'm not certain of this. I dont particularly care for the firmware on it, so ive got it sitting in its box unused. My question is, do we own it. I would be interested in flashing another fw on it, but obviously don't want to pwn a router that doesn't belong to me.

Thanks.

If you can flash another firmware onto it other than the Spark firmware and existing Vodafone id be surprised. Very locked down device.

Best option with these is to flash the Bigpipe firmware on them. It's (AFAIK) not locked down at all.
