I sent an email to an acquaintance on Monday and he didnt respond, and I thought that's a bit rude.

Turns out he probably hasnt received it as I just got this last night ...

Reporting-MTA: dns; mailfilter2.ihug.co.nz

Final-Recipient: rfc822;"friend"@btinternet.com
Action: failed
Status: 5.0.0 (permanent failure)
Remote-MTA: dns; [65.20.0.49]
Diagnostic-Code: smtp; 5.4.7 - Delivery expired (message too old) [Default] 421-'Too many messages (1.5.7.2) on 2017/06/08 11:30:04 BST from un-validated IP address: 203.109.136.2. Please add a SPF record for the domain vodafone.co.nz to your DNS or ask your Broadband Provider / Domain Registrar to do this, we will be unable to deliver email until this is done due to the volume of email being sent from this IP address. Guide for bulk senders www.bt.com/bulksender' (delivery attempts: 76)

Am I the bulk sender?

Ihug don't publish an SPF record. Move to a professional email provider - Gmail, Office365, FastMail, Zoho, etc. ISPs tend to suck at email, but this is worse than expected.

Well there's the funny thing. I'm not with ihug. I'm with Vodafone.

Vodafone don't either

"An SPF record is a type of Domain Name Service (DNS) record that identifies which mail servers are permitted to send email on behalf of your domain. The purpose of an SPF record is to prevent spammers from sending messages with forged From addresses at your domain."

I don't know why they just don't have an allow all rule.
I assume because spam filters probably rate "allow all" worse than "no record at all".

Vodafone bought ihug several years ago and it seems that some of the servers still use the old name :)

Slightly off-topic, but slightly related too maybe.

I have an internet.co.nz email address that is getting spoofed a bit. (see https://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumId=113&topicId=214492)

I just used that tool and there is an SPF record for them.

Spoofing is easy and doesn't matter about SPF record.

Anyone can set a "FROM" header in an email and it appears to be from someone.

Hell, you can do it in Thunderbird by putting sender as "Mr Fake" <mrfake@example.com>.

SPF record is used by spam checkers to check if the email server who sent them the email is allowed to do so.

So meanwhile, I have resent the email from my iconz.co.nz account.

ICONZ do have an SPF record so hopefully btinternet will deliver it this time.

Probably wont find out today as it's late already over there.

Fingers crossed.

I'm with Voda using ClearNet address ... for the last year I have had lots of trouble sending to a correspondent in the USA as emails invariably get bounced back as -

Reason: Rejection greeting returned by server.

Diagnostic code: smtp;554 5.7.1 RBL Restriction: Blacklisted by Internal Reputation Service - 127.0.0.2

- and for this person I have to use an alternative SMTP service.

Presumably the recipients' ISP is rather relaxed about checking (and clearing) their blacklist  logs?
