We own an investment property a few doors down the road (one way to have influence on who your neighbours are). New tenants recently dropped Vodafone, and went for a VDSL provider.

Me, and a couple of friends who also know a bit about such things, are surprised at the mess left by whomever (Vodafone or Chorus contractor?) disconnected the flat at the post they were connected to. Cables ends are blowing in the wind. Lots of surplus cable, generally untidy. Is this common / 'normal' Vodafone practice?

The previous tenants at my place had Vodafone cable and the lead in remained for about two years after I moved in. Unfortunately overhead cables tend to survive in places with extreme wind so eventually it lost tension and the landlord asked Vodafone to come and remove it which they eventually did.

 

I have always been tempted to get it reconnected but have held back partly because of the fear of the same problem occurring, and partly because of all the horror stories about poor performance on the HFC network.

UFB is being installed soon - installers are only a block away. i'm contemplating adding a clause to our tenancy agreement saying they are not allowed to get Cable reconnected. The coax around the outside of the house is falling off, and when the house needs painting next, I want to remove the rest of it.

Normally i'd be against this blocking of connectivity.

 

 

 

in this case though, can't any reason to not go with fibre if its there.....

Standard HFC network. Bloody untidy and just generally rubbish. Auckland would be pleased it was stopped getting installed so it doesn't end up looking like Vietnam like Wellington does.

Humm ... someone, perhaps in this forum ... said I should get on to Vodafone to fix this. I lost track of the post / PM / email or whatever, and didn't follow up. Now we might be paying a cost.
After about ten months of pretty much excellent performance from FibreX, we've had to reboot our cable modem three times in the past week. Vodafone CSR (who answered on the first ring - credit where it's due!) agreed that this mess might be linked to our problem - water slowing getting into the termination block thing from which our home is provisioned. Downers coming to look at it tomorrow!

Excellent first response from Vodafone. Hopefully that will fix the problem.

Does the RG-6 cable have a steel suspension wire? Usually it's fine for a setup like that as long as the cable has the extra steel suspension wire properly strung along with the actual RG-6 cable.

My usual, very efficient, Dower Dude came around as scheduled today. Signal strength at the cable modem was OK, so I can only guess the problem that support people found on Sunday is further from us, in the network somewhere. Before he arrived Speedtest results were sitting around 200/8 (very unusual that upload was less than the target of 20). After he finished, they were regularly 200/20. I think it's because he spoke nicely to the modem. (... or because he rebooted it, on reflection ...)

He also tidied up the cable that started this discussion!
