Didn't even know anyone was still using it, to be honest. Wouldn't it be phased out when Spark replace the NEAX exchanges?

Anyone got stats on usage of it? Would expect other that cheap dairies eftpos machines it would be zero?

I have a customer still using it for emails.

 

But now of course vodafone are not supporting emails.

 

I did set the gmail account up in windows live but it takes ages for it to download even one email

 

Chrome will run the email over dialup up but it keeps losing the connection.

 

Trying to get them to move to broadband but they don't have any other use for the internet.

I wish I had my first 28k modem, only cost $500, I'd give a discount to GZers at $400, what a bargain.

Look at moving them to some sort of mobile solution? T Stick etc?

Move them over to a Spark Wireless Home Phone - includes 5gb data, home phone (with free national calling and caller ID) for the same cost of a regular landline (which is $55/mo from memory). Likely be cheaper than what they're paying now.

From my experience, a client on dialup
When their dialup stopped working (not a modem issue) , helpdesk pretty much admitted it wont be fixed . They couldnt (wouldnt?) fix it . 
They had to go to wireless internet . Sometimes people just need to be forced off dial up .

 

Thank God eptpos is now pretty much removed from dial up
"sorry, you cant pay by eftpos as someone is on the phone/faxing"

According to Wikipedia, "As of October 2015, there are 53,000 dialup connections in New Zealand"

 

Surely that number must have dropped a fair amount in the last two years?

One of my employers still had a few dial ups, mainly for older remote equipment in the middle of nowhere with no cell reception or no upgrade in hardware to make use of cell.

 

Funny thing was, we kept paying for them, but noone could tell me exactly where the gear was located, just that they kept getting reports from it :D

Dialup is a strange one out there....

Support for it these days is almost unheard of.
When i was support business queues for about 6 months... I got like 3 dialup calls in total. (Consumer routed dialup calls included)

In terms of the actual fault.
2 were a pstn issue (no dial tone so not like dialup is gonna work)

Last one was a customer trying to improve his dialup performance following noticing that when the power is out to neighbours eletric fence he got an increased bitrate...

Felt for the poor guy, was in the middle of nowhere.

 As a side note

 

As part of Sparks contracted commitments to the Commerce Commission - we (as a service company to Chorus) still do ( from randomly selected access points around the network) dial up testing through spark's dial up access modems about every 6mths to show that they are still operational as per specs
