Looks like Vodafone are working on some new voicemail features:

Chorus has spent $1.4 billion on making their xDSL broadband network faster. If your still stuck on ADSL or VDSL, why not spend from $150 on a master filter install to make sure you are getting the most out of your connection?

Good. Because this week our landline was migrated to the new Telecom Call Minder platform which had some pretty cool stuf in there.

I've been playing with Visual Voicemail at home on my Asterisk box and some Aastra phones. Nobody ever rings me and leaves voicemail but having spent some time playing with it you realise what a cool feature it actually is!

I saw a tutorial somewhere on Apple's website re visual voicemail.  It's a very cool feature whereby all messages are displayed on the screen of the IPhone with names for each message - and various touch-buttons such as play and rewind for each name - you simply choose the message you want to review and hit play.

I'll try and find the link later..

Visual voicemail (.mov file) for the old iPhone

So how does visual voicemail look like on Asterisk? (maybe compared to the iPhone implementation?)

It's more of an Aastra feature than an Asterisk feature since the Aastra's support full XML so the potential for applications is really up to your imagination!

On the phone screen it shows the messages and who they are from. There are softkeys to play, another to delete, another to save and another to change between folders. It's very nicely implimented.

So when you play a message on the handset it is streamed from the asterisk box or the handset precaches the message in your case Tony?

The IPhone & AT&T implementation details that I have found seem to indicate the media is precached and this is initiated by a notification or push from the carrier side - im not sure how you could do this very elegantly from your Asterisk box notifying your mobile phone without incurring data usage on your handset. Really needs to be a carrier implemented feature... *ponder* Although with $1 a day casual rates *more pondering*

It is simply played from the Asterisk box. It's really just a XML version of the Asterisk Web based VM application, it doesn't precache the audio or anything fancy like that.
