Not sure what PSI refers to. There is nothing like that in the stats. PCI, which indicates the tower I am using, is 209.

No it remains the same. I actually did a manual scan when I was trying to figure out what was going on, but the only thing that came up was the Flaxmere site. A few years ago I had major problems and at that time my modem was jumping around between different sites. For some reason it kept trying to connect to a site in Napier with a much weaker signal. But that was a long time ago and it hasn't happened since. This time it stayed on 209 even when the signal dropped down. There are only one or two other sites we would be able to get a signal from at all at our location, and it would be very weak.

Something weird going on here. I was browsing and everything was fine when suddenly everything came to a screeching halt. I checked the modem and the stats were still fine but speed tests are reporting download speeds of 0.2 - 0.3 Mbps! They have now recovered a little to around 1 Mbps but I still can't get Google Street View to work. Is this just Sunday mast congestion or is something else going on? I have never seen it this bad before.

My RSSI has fallen to -93!

I just rebooted the modem and it's back to RSSI -75 dBm. 

How can I find out if the modem is actually faulty? This kind of ting is driving me up the wall. What do I do now?

I don't know how to assess these things. I don't think there is an issue with the antennas, but how do I test that? There seem to be a lot of random things happening and I can't figure out why. I have two identical ANT0627y11 wideband antennas. These are supposed to be the recommended standard for RBI. One is part of the original installation. The second one I added but it never worked as expected. I tried it at first in a MIMO LTE configuration but it actually reduced my test speeds. I tried every variation I could think of but I could never get any improvement. I finally mounted both antennas vertically on the same mast and my test speeds shot up from 30 to 50 Mbps. I thought that was good enough and left it.  

Over time, performance has steadily degraded. As far as I can tell (not being an antenna engineer) this is mainly due to mast congestion. But then these weird things described above started happening after I replaced a faulty modem. When things were working normally, I have tried connecting each antenna one at a time to check their performance. Both seem to work correctly. I have also connected them both, first in AB order, then BA. When the modem is working correctly and either one antenna or both are connected, I always get a 4G signal. When no antenna is connected, it always falls back to 3G but I still get a usable signal. 

The faulty modem that I replaced was definitely faulty. It failed while I was on-line. When I rebooted and reset it, the error LED kept flashing and it never found any signal, even 3G. As soon as I connected the replacement, it immediately started working. Then all this weird stuff started happening. I don't know what to make of it. Because of our location, we don't really have much alternative to our present ISP and our phone is also dependant on the Internet connection. It is an enormous hassle and I am getting very discouraged. I don't understand why all this is happening and there doesn't seem to be a clear answer to any of it. That is why I have started posting about it here. I don't really know what else to try.

Okay, and now our connection has just fallen back to 0 bars, -85 RSSI again. Once again, what the HELL is going on?

Log a fault with your ISP (who you pay your $$$ to)

Before logging a fault I am trying to gain better understanding of the problem. Someone is lending me another modem to do a comparison test. Prior to that I have been checking my connection all day to build up a reference baseline. I am noting the number of signal bars, which ought to give at least a rough indication, as well as modem stats and speed tests. What surprises me is there seems to be very little relationship between these. Several times today my signal indicator has gone from 3 bars to 0 bars. RSRQ usually stays around -7, sometimes -10. RSRP is always around -107. RSSI changes the most, between -73 to -91. Yet there is little correlation between these and my speed tests, which range from about 7 Mbps up to 25 Mbps. I have seen speeds of 20-25 Mbps when the modem is showing zero bars of signal and RSSI is at -91 dBm. I have had speed tests of 7 Mbps with three bars and RSSI -75. There doesn't seem to be much connection. However, yesterday afternoon everything fell back to dial-up speed (0.03 Mbps) for about three hours for no apparent reason. That hasn't happened again but it adds to my confusion.

I don't recall anything like this with the previous modem. I want to see if these readings stabilise with the new one. If they do, I can safely conclude that my modem is somehow faulty. Otherwise it is back to the antennas. There isn't much else that can be ruled out. 

The reason I am doing all this is because I don't just want the problem fixed. I want to know what is causing it. Otherwise I am just as helpless if it happens again.

Modems "accidentally" connected to directly to 240v can "become faulty" and need replacing.

A replacement modem would give you a definitive answer.

I would never condone doing this.  Doing this would be naughty and bad and potentially kill you and be fraud and I'm sure I'll trigger 500 angry replies so don't do it.
