My parents are still with WXC, however they actively still use the @xnet.co.nz email address and don't wish to lose yet another ISP provided email (they are old)

 

My parents also want to look at fibre, but WXC haven't expanded their offerings since the dark ages, Since it was rebranded to 'Vodafone Next generation' its still 'Last Generation'  I don't think they do fibre faster than their VDSL connection, they don't tend to answer support emails and their live chat has been dead for years.  All I need to know is if my parents move to an alternative ISP can they set up a permanent forwarder to the email address.

 

 

 

Has anyone recently got any support out of them or done the same?

See if you can keep their mailbox and change to vodafone for fiber?

I'd get them going with their own domain or gmail.

Talk to Vodafone about it. Think you'll find its probably going the way of IHUG or they're concentrating on commercial areas.

Yeah I tried talking to Vodafone and they referred me back to WXC who didn't respond.

 

Ideally id like to move them on to a gmail address (which they also have) but would want their old wxc email forwarded to that address like Voda / Spark did.

I dont know if you'll have access from the WXC webmail system, but check if you can activate forwarding from there. If can, then setup Gmail, forward WXC to it, and put a signature on Gmail clearly stating "PLEASE NOTE CHANGE OF EMAIL" so hopefully recipients will update their address books :)

Gmail used to have (and presumably still does, but I've not checked) a mechanism where by it would fetch remote mail for you by POP3 or IMAP and add it into your gmail inbox.   Unless your parents are accessing their WXC email via a web-browser, they'll almost certainly be using a POP3-based connection (via Outlook, or whatever), which means it should be supported by both ends...

 

I would check, but Gmail blocked by corporate policy where I'm currently working...

Whether they can access it from another account, or forward it from another account is beside the point.  I know I can set up a forwarder but the real goal is, if they cease to have an account with WXC its likely they forwarder would disappear with the account.  the aim is to retain a move to another ISP but retain the ability to still retrieve email to @xnet.co.nz address

Did you ring them?  They were in the past a full support company, so if they haven't answered emails the next logical step would be to ring.

A year or two ago i looked at going to Vodafone fibre/tv but pulled out of the deal, but i did ask WXC re my email account and being able to continue with it.  They said to me at the time that i was able to change ISP and still maintain my Xnet account for $5 a month.

Not sure why you are quoting me out of order @quickymart? "and they referred me back to WXC who didn't respond" suggests he emailed them, as generally when you call and speak with someone they don't not "respond"...

Whereas I would get them going with Fastmail for a very modest sum of $30 per year on their most basic account. After vodafone dumped what I found to be a perfectly adequate and reliable webmail service for over 10 years, i've found Fastmail to not only live up to it's name but to have great features. (No I don't work for them.) The other plus is they don't constantly change the UI without actually letting customers know about it, which is a gmail practice which causes confusion and stress for non technically minded people. In my case I wouldn't want to confuse my parents with a domain allocation as well.

 

I really miss WXC, and I think I found them from others reccomendations here. They were a first in many ways including billing flexibility and the customer portal as I recall. Their VOIP solution worked reliably for me also when I was living in a small town for several years.

 

If only there was some kind of law which could block 'forced' corporate takeovers of innovative and small NZ companies, but based upon public consent.
