attilathegorilla: Economies of scale. I also like to make decisions for myself, and u can tell that a lot of us here do. That`s why we come and go from ISP to ISP. One is too slow, the other is too expensive. All because there are too many of them for a small country.

At the current speeds, anyone on the Torrent plan will be lucky to achieve 20GB a month.

It is good there are too many ISP.If there are only one ISP it'll be extremely expensive just like telecom owning the broadband infrastructure.

See how they were extremely expensive and under invest?

and see how vodafone charges us so much for calls?

More competition is good

You know even a small place like Hong Kong there's like 7 different mobile operators and dozens of ISP each offering different pricing,speed and features

without competition there'll be no improvement to anything and cost will be high

Couldn't edit my last post for some reason and the surfing is extremely slow right now on xnet

Anyway.

If there were no competition companies would be charging unreasonable rates.

They will certainly provide bad customer service like that company starting with V

*notes your trouble* ...and now it really falls apart. I can barely even send email. It's 50/50 whether it works or not. I'm not even going to try and browse internationally till 8am. I give up tonight.

Not true. We have this big chunk of fibre called the Southern Cross cable that sits at well under 20% utilization. The reason why our speeds are so bad is not because we are far away, it is because buying capacity on this cable is so damn expensive.

That`s why I said it should be a state-owned enterprise, to make sure we are not ripped off, and that the necessary investments do get made. Bring us a bit of communism ;)

If honest work and justice are not enough - we'll get a lawyer.

Funnily enough, Telecom owns 50% of that little glass strand in the Ocean. Ever wonder the correlation between no speed problems on the Xtra network and ownership of the link?
I went to a Cisco product convention back just after the cable was launched in 2000 - At that stage the initial capacity was 240g/bit, which Cisco noted was enough bandwidth to give EVERY household in the country a 1m/bit connection.
Stealing info from Wiki, its currently running 660g/bit (so lets say 3m/bit each house), and end-of-year will be 860g/bit, so give or take, 4m/bit per house.
Now, can you tell me that EVERY house in the country would need such a pipe all at once?

I think you forgot to take into account the 20 odd million people in Australia whose ISP's are also using the SX cable

Cable goes in both directions. NZ has an almost direct link to the states.

It cost USD $1.5 to $2 billion to build the cable..

If they are making supernormal profits why haven't any competiting cables on a similar scale been built already?

Kordia and Pipe Networks cable is around 10 years away at best.

hi guys. quick question. i have always been gettng poorer speeds than others.
My downstream in modem settings used o be 1900+ to 2000 but now its 1696 and my download speed is 3-5kb/sec (at this moment). Now, should I just switch to the normal plan? or stick to this? WHy has this figure gone down?

If the speed your modem reports continues to go down I'd call Xnet and ask them to run a line test. If they detect anything untoward you might want to have a technician sent out to look at your phoneline. However as callouts can be pricy if the fault turns out to lie with your equipment or inside your house, I'd try another phonejack, different cables, and a different router beforehand.

I still dont get it... my mate on the riccarton exchange - he says he is getting 300K/s over night speeds on torrent plan with xnet from RS servers.

last night I was lucky if I got even 8k/s

crazy thing is the dude in riccarton is the biggest downloader i know of.. easily gets 80gb a month

something just isnt adding up??
