You may be better off sticking with Kogan if you don't have an official device.

I have a PH-1, which was never sold in NZ but has essentially pure Android, including all of the default VoLTE / WIFI calling Options. I noticed earlier in the year when I was doing a test, VoLTE worked fine on Kogan, but doesn't on any other main networks tested.

I moved to Kogan due to their 2 for 1 offer last week and VoLTE has still been working perfectly. Just now, I received my first incoming WiFi call on Kogan on my privately imported PH-1 and it worked perfectly. Hopefully posting here won't make anyone decide to block this from working, but, for me at least, Kogan, through Vodafone seems to enable more features rather than Vodafone directly who lock down / disable if not on a whitelist.

I understand the need to test, but, once my 1 year is up, moving back will have to be carefully considered if it results in removed functionality.

2degrees certainly doesn't do this.
We have basically no cell coverage at home but sometimes you do get a bar of signal randomly.
If you're on a wifi call and the phone gets that tiny signal the call drops.

Can 100% confirm this is the behaviour on VFNZ. If this isn't happening on 2degrees that suggests an issue thataway. The only circumstance this wouldn't be the case is when you are dialing emergency services - it will prefer any cellular network, including Spark or 2degrees, if available.

This has got me wondering about the potential to be able to make and receive calls from multiple devices around the home. For example, could wifi calling theoretically be expanded to allow me to take a call on my Macbook Pro if my iPhone happens to be in another room or turned off?

You can if you're on the same Wi-Fi network (same functionality as before). Apple has a solution that allows you to do it when not on the same network also, however VFNZ appear to have opted not to support that at this stage.

Currently own an iPhone 12 so nothing matters right now. I did get a Oneplus 8 VoLTE to work(on Spark, Vodafone and Kogan) but it was never stable/often would miss calls whenever VoLTE was turned on, regardless of networks or Kogan the MVNO.

Definitely noticing call drops. Rather intermittent but occurring regular enough to be annoying.

I’ve had to disable wifi calling - call dropping every 10 minutes or so was getting painful.

I had a mate call me from VodafoneNZ before and call dropped a number of times got him to turn off WiFi on his iPhone and issue stopped

Just had my 1st VF WiFi call, everything went ok except for some reason it dropped from VoWIFI to VoLTE (I turned and had a look at my screen when it happened). Kudos to VF for having handover functioning, yes there was about half a second of mute/slight garble, but it resumed nicely - much better than the handover coming off suresignal from memory.

From Friday 10 December, Sure Signal users will need to ensure they have an alternative technology option to stay connected - either using newer 4G or 5G mobile network technology in areas where digital infrastructure has been upgraded, or via Wifi Calling in areas with limited or no mobile coverage.

Sure Signal is now an outmoded service using 3G technology that first launched in 2011, and all Sure Signal devices sold or dispatched by Vodafone since late 2019 have included a sticker on the box stating that this outdated technology would expire in December 2021.

Sharina Nisha, Head of Network Services, explains: “Technology is continually evolving, so we need to keep retiring unsupported legacy devices including Sure Signal to make way for newer and more efficient options. With the Rural Connectivity Group building more cell sites in rural NZ, and lots of Vodafone mobile network upgrades in recent years, the mobile network footprint has expanded. Or, customers can tap into a Wifi signal with our new Wifi Calling device feature.

“Wifi Calling is a great alternative for people with little or no cellular connectivity, for example in rural locations or businesses operating in buildings with thick walls. Wifi Calling is being rolled out over the coming months to selected phones, which means that a Wifi Calling enabled device with the latest software updates is required to connect.”

To use Wifi Calling, Vodafone NZ customers need a voice calling enabled plan, an eligible phone with the latest software updates installed and Wifi Calling turned on, plus a good quality Wifi connection. For more information, customers can visit this Vodafone Wifi Calling page.

“For the past two years, it’s been clearly marked on new Sure Signal devices that they are reaching end-of-life, and recently we’ve only been dispatching replacement devices or sending them out in extreme situations. We’ll be highlighting this shutdown to Sure Signal users over the coming months, mainly via SMS messages to let them know they may need to upgrade to Wifi Calling to stay connected.”

Vodafone has been investing hundreds of millions of dollars into digital infrastructure to build and upgrade cell sites around Aotearoa New Zealand. In a few years’ time, it is likely there will be 4G and/or 5G coverage everywhere the older 3G network reaches - and the 4G Calling (VoLTE) coverage area is rapidly expanding.

Vodafone also partners with the Rural Connectivity Group to build more rural digital infrastructure, and these sites predominantly include 4G and VoLTE technology, as older 3G technology is eventually and inevitably being superseded by 4G and 5G over time.

Sharina adds: “For the techies among us, it’s also worth noting that 10 years ago when many of these Sure Signals were installed, we offered mobile coverage using limited 2100MHz spectrum for 3G services. We have subsequently upgraded the entire Vodafone network to provide mobile coverage optimised with 900MHz spectrum for 3G services, so the customer impact should be fairly limited. This also underscores the importance of mobile operators like Vodafone having access to sufficient spectrum in the right bands to continue rolling out newer mobile technology, such as 5G, across New Zealand.”

That's not going to impress my next door neighbor as the only reason he's with Vodafone is Suresignal as we get virtually no cell signal where we live usually zero and on a good day 2 bars. If he has to buy new phones to get Wifi calling he will not be happy.

Likewise. The amount of times mine has lit up while I'm not using it, indicates neighbours phones are also jumping onto it given the area.

Huawei P20 has fallen off the radar as 'flagship' and therefore only gets 1 update a year if it's lucky now (last sec update is dated Jul 2020). So will be interesting to see if it gets enabled. It's in the OS, just needs the carrier update as far as I am aware.

Probably needs access to the SIM card for authentication, which is disabled in aeroplane mode.
