mwh:

I just got this email from Sky saying it will survive an extra month and they'll say more in a few weeks:

We want to let you know that we’ve been working closely with the team at Vodafone and are pleased to advise that VodafoneTV will remain active for you until 31 October 2022 after which, services will begin to shut down.

.

.

.

Thanks,

The Sky Crew

Originally VF said VTV would run until the end of Sept - and after that it will run on for a while but just not be supported. Closedown will be progressive and not everyone will lose it at the same time. Now looks like it will run until at least 31 Oct.

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

It's interesting that the email specifically says "VodafoneTV will remain active for you until 31 October 2022", and the same specific wording is repeated in both the email title and the email body.

I wonder if that means the service will still start to wind down for non-Sky subscribers from September as originally planned? Maybe Sky are covering the support costs for keeping it running just for their subscribers?

This is correct - Sky subscribers have received an extension.

So no real surprises here, Sky had signalled a couple of weeks ago their set top box wouldn’t be ready.

I think people should start bracing themselves for the new service to cost more than what Vodafone costs now. It’s a new box with new services, inflation is rampant across the western world and they have a project costing more and taking longer.

everyone else is putting their prices up…. I can see a price rise coming, justified on ‘well it’s all new kit and not a like for like replacement ‘

They'll undoubtedly have inflationary pressures, but they'll surely be considering the risk of increasing prices at the moment when they seem to be turning the business around.

Additional TV services are a luxury, and they will be towards the top of the list of things for cancellation when household budgets are stretched. I certainly don't envy Sky, it's probably not an easy calculation to make right now.

One thing that Sky really need to consider is doing away with locked in contracts. All other services whether they are entertainment or sports based can offer this as they don’t have anything tied up in hardware.

That is the expectation from consumers these days.

Durn.  Came here after reading in today's Herald: "Vodafone NZ's Vodafone TV service - which had been due to shutdown on September 30, has been given a stay of execution until October 30".  Looks like they may have generalized from info intended specifically for Sky customers.  Or maybe plans have just changed?  But according to the Vodafone website, the shutdown still begins on 30 September.  Still looking for a replacement for when it goes away.

That's what I was thinking, but according to the Stuff news article:

"Vodafone spokesperson Richard Llewellyn said the dwindling number VodafoneTV customers who had the box but who used it without subscribing to Sky’s channels would also be able to benefit from the extension."

The article can be found here

Ah ha!  Excellent.  Thanks for that.  Great to have the clarification.

Good to get the extension.

At present I am probably getting the Vodafone TV channels for no charge (since they split off my Sky channels) when I compare what I pay for broadband data against what I would pay if I was getting broadband data from some another provider. via Chorus Fibre (which is installed but not used)

Hence I am expecting some extra cost for the Skybox.

My expectations are low regarding the Skybox as I suspect to meet the similar channels as provided VTV they will be wanting to install a dish as well.

The VTV box just works so well for our viewing needs. Everything including Netflix, Prime etc is driven from the same box and remote.

You'd think Sky could give us a hint on what their new box will do, before we all go off and make other arrangements to cover off what we think it won't do. Things like YouTube, Free to Air, Spark Sport, etc. In case it's none of the above, a lot of us could be organising an Apple TV or similar. After which we might review whether we want/need the full Sky service anyway.

They have given hints but unfortunately that’s all - just hints and indications, nothing definitive, nothing you can hang your hat on. But yes you’re quite right.

Sky are due to report their annual results later this month. I’m guessing the new box will be officially launched alongside that, and we’ll hopefully then have more concrete information about what they’re going to offer.

Maybe Sky don't know / haven't decided?

I wouldn't be at all surprised if there's an intense unresolved internal debate at Sky about precisely what configuration(s) at precisely what price point(s) they'll offer.
Can and will any local storage be offered? If so, would it be, e.g. an SD card or M2-type SSD? In the base or in a 'Premium' offer? In every box but only turned on if the right software is loaded?
What features would be in the base software load? YouTube, NZ FTA channels? Browser and/or app based? What 'Premium' features could be offered, for how much?
What connectivity options would be turned on in base and 'Premium' configurations? HDMI? USB-C? WLAN? Wired Ethernet?
All at once at initial launch or 'Premium' first & 'Economy' later, or 'Standard' first and 'Premium' later?
What'll we call it for marketing purposes?

Almost all this stuff is software-configurable so doesn't actually have to be decided until the last minute
