No, the DishTV VU doesn't have recording abilities (to my knowledge), and I guess this is because if a stream is not available from OnDemand or another service, then most modern TV's have a record function built-in these days?
TVs with recording function record their own tuner.

It looks like we will have to get a dish. At one time I would have been able to jack up some sort of VTV replacement but old age has caught up with me and I now look for the easy way out
I don't think I'll bother with trying to "replace" the VTV. We really only have one of the breakfast shows playing in the morning while getting ready for work and the news in the evening. For this I'll just use the on demand apps in the ATV.

There seems to be some confusion between DishTV devices, and a 'dish' = satellite dish on roof 😉
The DishTV SmartVU device I installed is a direct replacement for the Vodafone TV one (albeit that it can also accept UHF and satellite inputs) using either Ethernet or WiFi connection for internet streaming, just like the Vodafone TV did.
I had a terrible time with a DishTV product several years ago - it was very slow, had an awful user interface and suffered from endless bugs that were never fully resolved. I ended up binning it, and it kind of put me off DishTV products. It was a long time ago though, and I know things have moved on a lot since then.
For anyone who has used a more recent DishTV product for a while, would you say the quality of the software is now good, and well maintained?
Just in case anyone shares my interest in obscurities of legal history, here is a brief summary of why we are allowed to record over the air (OTA - terrestrial and satellite broadcast) but not streamed content: https://legalbeagle.com/6696968-tv-recording-copyright-laws.html
For a drying, more technical description, I found this paper: https://chicagounbound.uchicago.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1214&context=law_and_economics
We are planning to use NextPVR with a TiVo for backup come October. Sadly, the NextPVR solution didn't live up to my high initial excitement. If there is interest I could document more of our experience here: https://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=83&topicid=293573&page_no=1#2859761

I've had a DishTV satellite receiver hooked into my PC for over 5 years and it hasn't missed a beat (used when wife is watching main TV or I want to record something).
The replacement DishTV SmartVU has been inplace only 24 hours, but seems quite reliable and stable so far ... even the grandkids are using the remote and slightly different interface with abandon.

I wouldn't call it slow, but it does have weird bugs every so often. The user interface was modified for Freeview Plus when it came out. It has since gone (I think). I don't find it the least bit intuitive! We only use it to One News when we go to bed each night. It does that about 90% of the time (somewhere around 20-30 days a year when we can't use it).For anyone who has used a more recent DishTV product for a while, would you say the quality of the software is now good, and well maintained?
Mine was a DishTV S8200, which I think is an older model than the A2. Personally, I think it was terrible, but then I don’t have much time for unreliable or unintuitive devices these days.
Tatou:
I am in the same boat of having to reconsider whether to continue with the Sky channels or just go streaming( Netflix etc) on an Android box.
Sadly the house we bought four years ago had a Sky dish with coax cabling to many rooms. I removed them all as we had VTV which was far superior (and of course we could get the Sky channels) and rewired the house with ethernet cables.
I too had hoped for a VTV like box and NO satellite dish. Talk about back to the past...
My new home was built without a dish... as I had a Vodafone TV device.
Just held on for ten minutes to speak to Sky Customer Services about cancelling my Sky subscription... When I explained that I was cancelling because of poor replacement for the Vodafone TV, I was informed about a 'no dish' solution for former Vodafone TV customers and to hold out for my personal invite email from Sky.
I've decided to NOT cancel my Sky subscription and wait for details of their 'no dish' offering.
No dish option is simply the CC running Sky Go app.

Yep.
It does not resolve the stagnation of content and the circulating repeats.
