insane: Geez, tough crowd - hopefully others will be as forgiving the next time you make a honest mistake..

I've kindly let them know...

Fair enough 😁

I guess we'll see how quickly they fix it - another indicator.

Back on topic, I'm glad there are still a few local companies offering flexible VoIP to residential customers.

Went into a Vodafone retail shop today.  Complete useless.  Found my account on the computer readily enough but could offer no explanation or help other than to say ring the old WxC 0800 support number.

Oh well, at least Vodafone residential support is consistent :)

So rang the old WxC 0800 number (Voda Next Gen) and had a call back in commendable quick time. Short answer was that unless I wanted a new Internet connection with a modem that only supports analog phones, the recommendation was 2talk (other SIP trunk providers are of course available).

So this week I will have to narrow down the choices. Deadline is mid August.

Yep, I just got the same feedback from the phone call. Interesting they're recommending a specific provider in 2talk. I'm now trying to decide between KiwiVOIP, Hero or 2Talk for my PAP2 ATA + analogue setup.

These companies don't always make it easy to work out what their rates are though. On the KiwiVOIP website, they give you their plans e.g 'Home Basic' at $10/month gets you 2000 Local mins per month + 100 National Landline mins per month. I can't see anywhere what the rates are over and above that.

What would be the closest equivalent to the current 'VFX Line' plan @ $10/month? Free local calls, and pay as you go mobile?

For Hero it looks like 'Flexi Lite' (although you seem to get 300 mins which includes calls to NZ mobile numbers).

EDIT: Good to note the 2talk website is working properly now ;)

EDIT 2: Just signed up for a trial of Flexi Lite with Hero, since we do call a few mobiles, aren't heavy users, and they provide a specific SPA122/PAP2 setup, which encourages confidence.

Both work fine with PAP2Ts - I have many PAP2Ts in a box.

I've just put in a number port request with Hero, should go live tomorrow. The guides on their site are for the SPA112/122, and reference the very similar PAP2.

While I wait for the port, how have you set your PAP2's up with them? It looks fairly straight forward from their web-based console to enter various details. Again, the console has a drop down for the Cisco 112.

Do I need to crack into the 'admin' section of the PAP2 itself, which is currently provisioned to WxC/Vodafone? So far what I've done is enter the requested settings (https://faq.hero.co.nz/index.php?action=artikel&cat=18&id=102&artlang=en-us) into the Line 2 and User 2 section of the PAP2 web interface, which is the only one I have access to, since the device is currently 'admin' locked & provisioned by WxC.

Ask WXC to release the admin details if they have. locked it and withdrawing service they should provide this information

WxC would lock you out of the admin account for auto provisioned devices - I think it was from the days of not wanting to disclose a good working config for NZ to mimic the PSTN. The devices themselves don't get locked though, so if you do a factory reset, you'll get admin access restored and be able to enter new provisioning details.

Not true, they can be locked with firmware, US VOIP providers do this

Actually, it is true. Just becuase somebody in the US does something, doesn't mean everybody else has to do it too.

Nice web console for Hero - very flexible & user-customisable. I'm already pleased to have moved on from Vodafone's relatively locked down offering. Not to mention it should work out a bit cheaper, since we make a combination of landline and mobile calls.

Looks like I'm all set up, the number has been enabled for use by Hero, PAP2T is online and registered (under Line 2, since I can't access Line 1's settings). Pending the number port going through tomorrow, I can now dial out from Line 2, but can't yet receive calls, interestingly enough. Once it's all working (presumably tomorrow), and when I've got a few minutes where I don't need a phone line, I'll look at resetting the PAP2T to see if I can get full access, or failing that contact WxC or Vodafone for the unlock details.

There are some guides to override otherwise vendor locked firmware too, but I'm a bit cautious about bricking the device.

Thanks for the recommendations, all. So far, so easy.

To unlock it, either factory reset it, or get WxC to push the unlocked config to it through their provisioning system.

To factory reset, either use the reset button or  dial **** then enter 73738# (RESET#). It will ask you to confirm.

Thanks. I'm wondering if I should get WxC (or would it be Vodafone??) to push the unlocked config tomorrow morning, before my number ports to Hero in the afternoon. Although it looks as thought both Hero and Vodafone can access the device at present, so maybe it doesn't matter when?

I have put in for porting two lines from VFNG to Hero to try. I am also impressed with the Hero user interface.

They say the port will happen tomorrow and I can hook up today which I will with my 3CX test platform.

if that goes OK will port remaining line.

All sorted.

The Vodafone/WxC guys were helpful, advising that a simple factory reset (****, followed by 73738#) should work (it did).

With the UI fully unlocked, I then entered all the details I could as per the Hero guideline for the SPA112. Not all of the advised settings are available, and of course there are plenty of other settings which you just leave alone.

Save, reboot the PAP2T, and all is working well.
