The other advantage is that if your device gets stolen with a physical SIM then the thief could remove the SIM, put it in another handset, and then incur charges before you've had the chance to cancel the SIM. This isn't a problem with an eSIM because they can't physically remove the SIM and they can't get past the passcode, Face ID or Touch ID on your phone.

Cool, I hadn't thought of this use case, for some VIP users it might be very useful to know that their number can never be used by anyone else if they lose their phone or it is stolen.

You could but it's a bit archaic to enable and you would have another PIN number to remember and how often does that trigger in normal operation day to day etc. Could be done, probably is used in some very high security cases I'd expect but I'd argue it's not as user friendly.

Do we have any idea when they are looking into esim for wearables & Apple watch? I know their page says "coming 2023"... Where have I seen this before. Vodafone will have esim in 2020... wait 2021... hold up...

Yes. Tough wait. They will never give an ETA until it's ready. The key thing is not to hold your breath.... 🤪

My views (except when I am looking out their windows) are not those of my employer.

I imagine it's probably not easy to implement because their infrastructure will need to enable the ability for phone calls to be simultaneously routed to two different devices, and the billing stack will need to be configured to allow them charge a monthly fee for the wearables add-on.

Having said that, they must be under a bit of commercial pressure given that Spark have had this capability for a long time, and 2degrees also seem to have committed to it. So, One might end up being last cab off the rank.

They're to busy talking about how they have partnered with Space X over and over again. Not that its a bad thing, its just not worth the hype they are trying to generate from it in my opinion. Quick to preach 100% mobile coverage, but a little quiet in mentioning its for text messages only (for now).

And MMS. The things that no one wants anymore.

It will be interesting to see how much extra they wish to charge users for the ability to send a text or MMS using this service. I don't think there would be many people (if any) willing to pay for this pretty minor and unexciting feature.

My point is people will weigh paying extra every month for a very unlikely scenario vs saving money. I just dont think there will be enough people willing to pay much extra for this. cost vs benefit.

In an emergency people wont care about cost, you are right there, but we are talking about something that will require users to be signed up and paying before the potential emergency happens. People would probably happily pay $20 to get a text out in an emergency but not happy to pay $20 a month every month prior for the ability to do that in the rare case it would be needed.

You can't TXT emergency services currently (deaf people excepted), so moot point.

I tried to get my connection transferred to eSIM at a OneNZ store this afternoon but they couldn't do it because computer said no.

While I was there I asked the guy if there were any updates on the Apple Watch situation and he said that it was originally planned for January but got delayed. I had been thinking that the end of this year was the most likely scenario but maybe the middle of the year could be possible.

Also means that features such as lost device tracking become disabled the moment the phone is turned off and turned back on, until the sim pin is re-entered.
