Remember, no nagging for timeframes else I will have to lock this again. It'll happen when it happens. I'm personally in the Apple Watch camp with the provider currently dragging their feet so know what it feels like but nagging for timeframes isn't helpful for anyone.

To me it seems pointless to wait until WatchOS 10/latest hardware, since I assume the process is effectively the same across all of apple watch devices?

From what I understand there’s a carrier bundle (?) update needed and for release management reasons Apple likes to roll them into iOS/watchOS updates. I could be totally wrong about this though.

Re hardware release - I think it makes sense from a marketing perspective to tie these together. Maybe it wouldn’t be a hard and fast “you can’t connect an older generation device until after the new one is available” but I can definitely see the public messaging being combined.

Thanks konfusd for keeping us informed. As a keen runner and open water swimmer, I am really looking forward to having the SOS feature available on my Apple watch on the off chance that I might need it one day. It's good piece of mind. 

 

Obviously my Apple Watch won't have any general connectivity while I'm waiting for you to roll out the full eSIM support, but I'm wondering whether it would still be capable of placing a 111 call in the interim? I seem to recall that phone handsets can still place 111 calls even with no SIM installed, so it's got me wondering whether the same principle would apply to an Apple Watch?

You need some sort of SIM for emergency access.
Without an eSIM loaded, it won't work.

It looks like this isn't supported on Apple Watch in NZ.

 

There's an Apple Support page that states "In some countries and regions, international emergency calling works even if you haven't set up a mobile data plan on the watch" but when you click through to WatchOS feature availability, under Communications: International Emergency Calling there's a footnote for NZ (among others) stating "Device must have been set up for cellular service with a carrier but does not require an active carrier plan."

Whoop, Whoop! Esim wearable OneNumber is live for One NZ at $5 a month. I have a Samsung purchased NZ S23 Ultra and Galaxy Watch 5 Pro but it doesn't work for me. I might try and get hold of support at some point later this morning.

Disappointingly only Galaxy Watch 6 is supported.
I'm not sure why they couldn't qualify previous generations.

Initial thoughts: Was pretty excited, I've been waiting for a while and stuck around with One.

 

 

 

Now: Seems like this is rushed, probably to beat 2degrees getting their wearables working. I would have expected Apple watch to have been a priority.

 

 

 

Back to the waiting table, unless 2degrees tempts me first.

I see they have a note on their FAQ that they are planning on supporting Galaxy Watch 5 soon. No word on Apple Watch.

I think this deserves a Congratulations to the One NZ team, this is a really big piece of work to complete to a telco standard, so well done!

 

 

 

On the Apple Watch side, it is just a longer process than for other 4G enabled Watches. There will be a very involved testing and approval process that takes longer and then enablement has to be scheduled into a deployment slot which are now coordinated globally, i.e. the days of a settings update for one feature for one mobile operator are long gone, unless super critical customer impacting. Apple don't cut corners on their side and likewise they wouldn't expect a mobile operator to hold off launching on other watches first.

As @timmyh explained (thanks!), everything points to Apple Watch being a fairly involved process. As we all know Apple loves to control the UX down to crossing the last t, so our project team will be coordinating testing with them - and this time of year is always slow going due to their annual platform and hardware release cadence.

 

That and the fact that Galaxy Watch 5 support is still in the works says to me that we're rolling out compatibility by model as we get everything signed off... and I'm not a Samsung guy but didn't the Galaxy Watch 6 just launch? In my book that would be a reasonable explanation of why it's the first (non-Apple) device where OneNumber is available (i.e. why would we focus on a previous generation first, while Samsung is pouring marketing dollars into the new one?)
