Mine goes fine on 4G and VoLTE as I was saying - and it's a parallel import.

Doesn't support 5G but that doesn't really bother me; coverage on that network is quite limited at the moment, 4G provides enough bandwidth for what I need. I do see a few areas around that are 3G only as well though. Most recently when driving out to Riverhead I was in coverage of a few 3G-only cellsites on the way. I presume (hope?) that these would all be upgraded to 4G before the switchoff date.

2G (GSM)is a lot harder to switch off, there is 100s of 1000s IOT devices out there using it (My Power Meter been one of them)

T-Mobile in the US has the same problem 3G is toast but GSM is still going

I can see VodafoneNZ blocking Voice calls and only allowing Packet switch data on the 2G network

I am sure they will allow 111 calls to go thru on 2G

I hope my 12 month old 3G-based alarm system works fine on the GSM/2G network. Guess we'll find out in 2 years time.

At this current time you can continue to make calls on 2G if you’re not in a 3G area or you forced your device to use 2G.

Anywhere if you force your phone to 2G.

However I know of one site where you’ll only get 2G and that’s out south beyond Lincoln about 50kms from where I live.

Took a trip once to pick up something on trademe and yep 2G only so it certainly exists.

Also have a mate in Taranaki that gets marginal 4G and will often switch to 2G at his house. 3G is the same.

Gotta look very hard to find 2G but it is there still!

@MaxineN Once 3G is turned off and power can be turned up on 4G you will find these locations no longer exist

They will stop handovers from 4G to 2G as well

Edit: actually I do not think HO would of worked from 4G to 2G anyway the call would just drop, It would need to go 4G to 3G to 2G

In my previous home, I had very weak signal in the home office due to it being underground… the calls would often drop to 2G - I was very impressed with the call quality. I couldn’t really tell the difference except for no data whilst voice was under way.

It goes without saying that the country is full of areas with poor reception, I know as I have to support the staff in these areas and have the pleasure of logging and chasing faults for them as attempts to get improvements. Some of our staff are simply kept on Spark due to this.

Some areas of complaint will benefit from any 4G boost but others will continue to be nope zones.

Some might benefit, but others lose out. Almost invariably the losers are those who can least afford to upgrade their equipment (the poor), or handle changing technology (the elderly) or those in remoter locations. That's without even considering the number of businesses that might have equipment that rely on the technology, often very large expensive pieces of kit.. That's why this sort of thing needs to be regulated by the government, so ideally people know "Okay this technology is going to be supported for 5 years, 10 years, 15 years, 50 years or whatever", with a controlled phaseout etc. Landlines were regulated, UFB is regulated (albeit not heavily enough), but mobile is a very very long way from being sufficiently regulated.
