LookingUp:

Thanks everyone for their very helpful and encouraging advice on this :-)

The ONT has been installed in mum's hallway, right next to the phone jack, so it should be relatively painless to connect the phone to it if we can do that.

To answer the "why fibre" question - because I spend far too much of my professional day sorting out issues with cellular telemetry systems to be confident that it's going be totally reliable and trouble free.  Having a fibre connection is not guaranteed to be perfect either, but at least there will be a degree of diversity given that she can at least txt us on her mobile if the landline is down. Having lived through the Chch earthquakes, when cellular comms were also pretty shaky at times, diversity of connections is a good thing for those who live alone and might need urgent help.

PS - I know it doesn't make sense that she can (reluctantly) txt but won't use the cell phone for voice calls, but unfortunately that's the reality of what I'm dealing with.

Make sure you cut the copper cable at the DMARC (while telecom box) from the internal wiring to remove the street out of the picture before plugging your internal wiring into the ONT

Last thing you want is the NEAX sending a large voltage down the line and damaging the ONT or sending your phone line out into the world

Wheelbarrow01:

Spark do offer voice only over fibre ATA - I just confirmed with one of my management contacts there.

Whilst Spark may have their own reasons for recommending a wireless service, if there is already an ONT there they will definitely connect it on voice only for you.

Yeah, saw I was corrected on that just after I posted

couple years ago my dad moved from spark landline to voice over wireless.
Spark sent him a wireless modem and ported his landline number to this.
He simply plugged his landline phone in and away it went.
My father has no interest in an internet connection. This product initially came as a voice only service and cost about $40 a month. However, a year ago Spark has added internet into this product at no extra cost (120 gig if I remember correctly). However, as I said, my dad has no interest in the internet so just continues to use it as a "landline" service.

Another option to throw in the mix; though initial technical setup required. 2talk VoiP line from $10+GST per month, + unlimited "slow" 4G connection for $15+GST per month. Find a second hand 4G router, an ATA or a DECT Cordless IP VoIP phone. A nicely featured cheap phone service.

May not be the best fit for this situation, but thought it worth mentioning, as it may also be an alternative for others looking for a similar solution.
