@Batman yes that is why satellite dishes are on roof tops poiting at the Sky direct line of site to Satellites
A standard cell tower would have trouble penetraning a concrete building let alone a satellite 100s of km up in the Sky!
I have yet to use it. Lacklustre 3G and 4G services may as well not exist in some areas as all they do is preclude you from using this service entirely. Shame there is no choice to force access to it or to fall over to it after say 30 seconds of the mobile network not responding.
looks like Apple are pushing Sat connectivity to more legacy devices..
"Apple says that satellite connectivity provided by carriers will be enabled on all iPhone 13 models, including the iPhone 13, iPhone 13 mini, iPhone 13 Pro, and iPhone 13 Pro Max. To use the feature, iPhone 13 users will need cellular service that offers a satellite connectivity option, and there are several carriers that have been rolling out the functionality.
In the United States, T-Mobile has partnered with SpaceX to provide customers with Starlink Direct service for connecting to Starlink satellites when Wi-Fi and cellular connectivity are unavailable. au and One NZ have also introduced satellite connectivity, as has Verizon, though Verizon's satellite option does not currently work with iPhone."

Is there anyone here who has found this genuinely useful? I'm curious as to what the use case is for it.

If you are in Rural NZ this is a god send,...
There are plenty of places where there is no mobile coverage, so to have text message support is huge...

There are a lot of place I go to play that don't have any cell coverage. It's been great to let my wife / friends know that my return time is going to be a few hours later than expected, and I'm not lying injured in some gully somewhere. It has given me the freedom to change plans on the go and let people know I'm going to be a few hours late if I have seen something that's maybe worth a look at while out and about in the middle of nowhere.
Note: In the south island, "nowhere" can be as little as 1/2 hour out of town and have no cell coverage.

I was going to say something similar... Also if something does happen, you have another option to get details out (but not to be relied on as a safety device)
It gives you a soft option, if you don't require the S&R calvalry 🙃
I'm not a complete idiot, I still have some parts missing.

Just as Personal Locators and devices like the Garmin InReach drove "Mountain Radio" out of business, satellite texting will hugely shrink the market for PLBS....
For those who have used it how does it generally perform under tree cover?
