Good morning, hello, and B•••ocks  Roger Mellie. (Yes, I'm a fan of Viz also).

I've had eSim on Vodafone, now One NZ for a few months now.

They released it in November but didn't bother contacting people who signed up for updates.

You need to be on monthly account, and bring it into their store so they can send you it by email and recycle the old sim once it is deactivated from your number.

It took me ten minutes to do that with a new trainee at Lambton Quay who I knew gave good service from his previous job.

Edit : apparently watches will be supported later this year, I guess before the WWDC announcements for WatchOS 10 ?

Yep, I went into my local store the day they made eSIM live, and what looked to be the store manager had some issues doing it for me - ended up having to call his superiors!

This 100% coverage plan is going to be interesting, Southland (let alone the country as a whole) is bigger and more remote than it feels.

dylanp: Okay… does anyone know which phones will support that?

All 5G phones will support SpaceX satellite calling.

In practice this is most smartphones of the last few years.

Definitely most Oppo phones, most Samsungs which haven't smashed their screens yet, recent iPhones with FaceID.

Mine doesn't do 5G, and I know quite a few people who don't have 5G phones. Will they all need replacement?

Only if they want to use the SpaceX connectivity. The 4G ground network remains so as long as they are 4G they'll be fine.

You will get 5G when you next upgrade. Given that the full service with calling is 2 years away, you will probably upgrade in time to use it.

I would not worry if you are not the first to use the service, there is plenty of dinosaur phones out there and will be for some time yet.

I don't plan to upgrade this phone in the near future. The new Samsung phones don't have a few key features I'm looking for.

Noob thought as I was on an airplane yesterday- I wonder what what would mean for being able to (naughtily) use your phone on domestic flights once this becomes available

In theory all that is required is that the airplane electronics not be taking on interference from 5G satellite calls, data, texts, & pxts.

I would suggest that seeing as they have no issues with bluetooth, this shouldn't be much of an issue for Air NZ planes.

I have seen that some pilots in the US airlines use Airdrop over 300 metres vertical difference to share photos from the cockpit.

And another player for 5G. Sateliot, has sent up their first ones as a spacex partner.

So now we have them, potentially enabled gen2 starlinks with 5G capability? Going to get busy up there.

I guess the ComCom is finished solving fuel, grocery and building product pricing then... :)

The Commerce Commission has issued a “stop now” letter demanding One NZ cease advising it will provide 100% mobile coverage launching in 2024, but it is not yet clear whether the telco will comply.

Commerce Commission chair John Small said it was concerned that the marketing did make clear that the coverage would only provide the ability to access text messaging from late 2024 and “will only be accessible in locations where a consumer’s mobile phone has line of sight to the sky”.

Press release:

ComCom concerned One NZ “100% mobile coverage” ads misleading – issues Stop Now

The Commerce Commission has issued a Stop Now Letter to One NZ (formerly Vodafone NZ) for representations made in its campaign promoting “100% mobile coverage. Launching 2024”.

Commerce Commission Chair, John Small, says the Commission’s early investigation into representations made in One NZ’s campaign – across various media and advertising channels – raised concerns that the conduct may be in breach of the Fair Trading Act and that consumers are being harmed, and that it could distort competition in the sector.

The Stop Now Letter identifies the Commission’s most significant concerns about One NZ’s claim – “100% mobile coverage. Launching 2024” – as being potentially false and/or misleading. These concerns arise from the absolute and unqualified nature of the claim and that the majority of the advertising does not make it clear that limitations apply to the mobile coverage. In particular:

- The coverage will only provide the ability to access text messaging (SMS and MMS only) from late 2024; and
- The coverage will only be accessible in locations where a consumer’s mobile phone has line of sight to the sky. The promotional material does not explain what this means.

The Commission believes that the claim - “100% mobile coverage. Launching 2024” – is likely to be understood by consumers as the ability to access all current mobile services – text messaging, voice calling and data – in all locations in New Zealand, at all times, from 2024.

However, the ability to access text messaging will only be late in 2024 (potentially as late as 31 December) with voice and data services following later in 2025. Text messaging send and receive times will also initially average 2 minutes, rather than the typical expectation of near instantaneous transmission.

“In our view, the claims are misleading because they give an overall impression that all currently available mobile services will be supported from next year, instant communication will be available and the 100% mobile coverage will be available from locations where in fact, that may not be the case where there is no line of sight to the sky,” Dr Small says.

“The requirement for line of sight to the sky may significantly reduce the usefulness of the service in a way consumers would not expect, which is not apparent from the claims.”

The Commission has requested that One NZ cease and not recommence making the representations without providing prominent qualifying information that explains the limitations of its coverage.

Dr Small says the Commission will continue to monitor the use of all representations made by One NZ with regard to this campaign, across all communications and platforms, and may consider further action as appropriate.

Only the courts can decide if there has been a breach of the Fair Trading Act.

On the OneNZ website page for this service it is very clear that it is only text messages in 2024 with voice & data to follow in 2025, and that it requires "line of sight to the sky". The TV adverts that I've seen show people out in the open sending/receiving text messages, so I don't think there is much misleading here.

Perhaps you could argue that most people won't go and read the website page so then a short disclaimer line added to the end of these ads might be enough.

It's also worth balancing the ComCom concerns against the very significant benefits that will come from having this additional satellite capability i.e. during Cyclone Gabrielle when the cell sites were out over large areas and the fact that 50% of NZ by geography is not covered by cell sites - which is a pretty high ratio by comparison with other countries.

So in the end, very hard to see any element of deliberate misleading and if there are any aspects that aren't totally clear then that should be fairly easy to rectify.

The ComCom are complaining about a service that isn't due to rollout for 12-18 months.... Oh the joy to have such prescience,

Maybe they could also tell Lotto to stop advertising as they never show the many people who don't win.... :)
