iPhone 11 should support wifi calling.
What you could do, is register that device for Wifi, put in flight mode and then it will be 100% wifi calling... no roaming charges at all.

Unsure about the iPhone 8 however (believe 2 Degrees supports earlier devices however)

Wifi calling works on your Iphone 8 and 11. You must enable it in NZ before you go, preferably sooner rather than later. Instructions are here:

Before you go make sure all your emails have got alternative authentication to another email or phone in place. Because you are accessing email via Starlink you can be blocked by gmail etc as suspicious because you are not in your usual place. Starlink can show you as in Brazil, Philippines etc depending on the satellite. I got blocked and couldn’t get back into my mail for a few days and when I checked through the security settings it looked as if I’d been to a dozen countries. Roaming didn’t work on the ship either, also had trouble getting roaming to work in some ports.

Enjoy your trip.

Ok so I asked at one NZ instore... and a lady with a very heavy Asian accent just handed me a piece of paper about roaming charges

the one that would suit is us 'Weekly Prepay Roaming Add-on'

1GB data

100 minutes outcgoing and incoming to std NZ and local numbers

100 Txts to std NZ and local numbers

$22 a week - TXT 'BUY WEEK' to 756 to get this add on

We'd have to activate it the day we leave NZ... but it's only for a week, and once that runs out we probably can't renew it

I think I'll jut do wi-fi calling - looks relatively simple and both our phones are capable of doing it

Can you do wifi calling if your phone is on airplane mode?

If your phone is in airplane mode, 100% wifi calling works overseas. It's free roaming essentially. You will receive calls and SMS and can make calls and send SMS. The charges are the same as if you were in NZ and calling and sending SMS to NZ numbers. I don't know how much Prepay charges for overseas calls and SMS - check your app.

Obviously you need to connect to a Wifi network to get an internet connection whist having Airplane mode switched on for wifi calling to work.

As per the others - it will work, this is an example with some Aussie SIM’s.

Could never get VoWIFI going aboard Princess on One. It wasn't having a bar of it.

As for roaming.. consider if you're going to be able to actually use it. Leaving Brisbane you lost signal real fast once it was in the shipping lane beyond main centres.

Use the phone as a camera if you must. But take it all in. Not what's online. It's a holiday. Meant to disconnect!

Test it in NZ: enable wifi calling as per instructions, connect to home wifi, turn on airplane mode and after a few seconds it will connect to One and you can make a call/send an SMS.

Successfully used WiFi Calling onboard Majestic Princess 5 years ago in the South Pacific. Just needed to be in a spot with good WiFi signal and probably when there weren't too many people all using internet at the same time.

People often mistake me for an adult because of my age.

Yes - we do plan to 'disconnect' and will probably only use the iPad for about 10 mins a day just to check the e-mails.... we both have elderly parents and will only need to use the phones to make / receive a call in an emergency...

I did wonder if emergency was an angle
Just be aware, that may not be possible. Even with roaming. And teach them the ship contact numbers. And vice versa.

When you compare coverage maps to marine traffic. There was very few times we had onboard sights of the towers. Not your average offshore pleasure craft when going between ports.
