Note with HFC is older setups can run into issues with the connectors. One thing I found with HFC when I had it is to observe the Cable Modem (the black box) and see it it looks like it is re-establishing connection with the network, if so then get a technician to come out and have a look at the cable between the model and the pole on the street.

In saying that, HFC is old technology and while it might cost more you’d find Fibre much more stable.

If you are in Christchurch then sign up for fibre.  Do this with One NZ then later you can move away to someone else if you wish to.

  • what devices are you using when having problems?
  • wired PC or mobile phones/tablets and laptops on wifi?
  • where’s the Vodafone wifi router sitting in proximity to everything using it?

They're sending me a free new modem. Let's see how that goes. I had forgotten that I had insulation done under the floor a little while ago. The problems started since then but it might be a coincidence. It's only gotten really bad in the last couple of weeks.

The fiber install is free, so can't get much cheaper than that. Over all it will be more reliable.

Hi, as others have mentioned, fibre as opposed to HFC cable that you are currently on are league's apart both performance wise and reliability, DO Not brush aside the recommendations to move as trivial, if you want the technically best and most reliable solution, then move from HFC to fibre.

If one nz try to convince you to stay on HFC then tell them to fu*k off, the Commerce Commission has already taken them to task for peddling a product that is not fibre but the attempt to sell as such, and it Simply is all lies

Fibre may cost a little more (per month) but connection issues like this are few and far between. If I had the option of fibre or cable, fibre is the absolute winner. Plus - free installs won't be free forever.

I think it costs quite a bit more per month for fibre optic. Also I have been told I would have to pay a cancellation fee of $200 to cancel my 12 month current plan. One step at a time. Let's see if the new modem fixes things. It will take 2-3 working days to be delivered and it's Christmas so maybe this coming Friday or Monday it will arrive.

I'll be surprised if it's the device at fault but stranger things have happened. I still suspect corrosion somewhere along the cable or joins, but a new device is good to have either way.

It's in their interest to move you to newer fibre infrastructure. If they won't do that in a customer centric way (easy and cheap), other ISPs will jump at the chance.

It's in your interest to consume a modern and supportable service too. While the benefit might not be immediately obvious when your service is operating normally, the disruption you are experiencing now may become more common and frustrating over time.

Do yourself the favour of eliminating avoidable frustration in your life. Fibre might cost a few points more a month, but how much is your time worth when you have to chase your ISP for fault resolution over a number of days/weeks? Scale that over a few years as the infrastructure continues ageing.

This one event may already be enough to make the fibre change fiscally worthwhile.

If you are still using the HG659 router that you got back in 2017 it probably has died (or at least the power supply for it). They were quite reasonable in their day but are pretty long in the tooth now.

I wouldn’t believe that, I moved from HFC to Fibre and all they did was reset the contract period. If they tell you otherwise then try to get put through to the Retention Team
