For those who ever get Vodafone Roaming set up for Prepay I've just had some rather interesting dealings with Vodafone regarding this.

My girlfriend got prepay roaming set up however wanted to know why when she was in the UK and Australia she was being charged on her roaming credit card bill rather than it being deducted from her account (as auto roam should), particularly in the UK as autoroam also doesn't pay an SMS surcharge whereas on account does.

After some discussion it turns out she has been charged for calls in Australia and the UK on autoroam as well as being charged on the credit card roaming and the final result was a credit from Vodafone for this double charging.

I have no idea if this is a widespread or an isolated problem but it's certainly something worth checking on if you do have prepay roaming set up.

Billing systems in both mobile operators here in New Zealand are plagued with problems. Revenue leakage is something they try to tame, but it's hard apparently.

Last month I was in the USA, and my SMS was charged first at $.57, then at $.60... But VF-NZ website says $.80. I contacted someone to ask about why the difference in charges, but couldn't find a reason.

freitasm the rate changes are different cause the exchange rate changes in the NZ dollar this is advised in the T&C's so why are you giving it the thumbs down.

johnr: freitasm the rate changes are different cause the exchange rate changes in the NZ dollar this is advised in the T&C's so why are you giving it the thumbs down.
The prices are listed on the Vodafone New Zealand website and they are listed in NZ$, not US$. There's no exchange rate involved on this.

Under roaming T&Cs it advises the rates can change anytime.

While I have no issues with the disclaimer saying rates may change I do find it an issue that Vodafone update their roaming rates so infrequently. Vodafone themselves seem to be completely unaware of some of the pricing, even ringing 777 will give different rates to both their website and what you charged on your bill. IMHO if you're going to list a rate you should be charging that - if rates were updated on a weekly basis in the billing system and updated on both the website and intranet then minor variations in the $ aren't going to be a problem, some charges the customer may gain a few cents on and others Vodafone will gain a few cents on. My main gripe is that very frequently the price you pay is not a published price.


Roll on Passport Roaming where you will be paying a fixed price and quite clearly now what those costs will be.

The issue here anyway was that if you organise prepay roaming you're charged twice for all charges when you go to an auto roam country, if this infact a widespread problem and not an isolated issue it's yet another very embarrasing billing problem for Vodafone.

sbiddle: Roll on Passport Roaming where you will be paying a fixed price and quite clearly now what those costs will be.
Except that it won't work on non-VF networks.
