Very true.

But there are other small countries population wise such as Fiji only 850K poeple and vodafone offers NZD $0.15 to call for Post paid call and NZD $0.17 for Prepaid plans.

alasta: People who complain about New Zealand phone charges being more expensive that that of other developed countries need to be conscious of the fact that New Zealand is a very sparsely populated country. The cost of building infrastructure here is enormous, relative to the potential returns, and I suspect that this is why TelstraClear could not justify going ahead with their own network (although there were probably political influences also).

Ireland is a very good comparison to New Zealand. Similair population and as a % of total population covered they are very similair (exclude land mass as NZ does not and never will have coverage over probably 50% of the land mass).

Call prices over there were similair to NZ up until the arrival of Meteor and now 3. It's amazing what a bit of competiton does for the market and surprisingly the APRU for O2 and Vodafone has not had a significant drop, with cheaper pricing people are simply using their phone more and spending similair amounts of money (hint hint Vodafone).
