What would be really cool is if u rang up Voafone and told them that their GSM network is the best, and that they should keep expanding it and dump their silly WCDMA network (cause CDMA technology is soooo slooooooooow).

that other post was done with a big smirk on my face, and no malice intended :-)
(I work on the Telecom side of the fence)

All views welcome here of course, but it pays to tread carefully and read up on a few topics before posting controversial stuff (i.e. do your homework), or the old timers around here will start playing up (as we do...)

Welcome to Geekzone too :-)

Joe_I_T Disenchanted is a top guy (still owes me a beer though) I reckon thats the only reason why he did not come to Auckland for the geekzone dinner.

But they are correct EV-DO is faster for data than WCDMA but you may have one of the handsets that is branded at T3G but these do not work on the EV-DO network and only on the 1RX TT. Great marketing on Telecoms part.

This is what I like to see, hard hitting factual reviews.

Joe, do you have to keep cleaning the drool out of your phones? Prehaps that's what's slowing them down?

To keep this on topic(?): I can get the top off a Heniken beer quicker than a Tui, therefore Tui is a much better beer. Q.E.D.

I'll apologise in advance for going so far off topic but...

New Zealand brewed Heineken is so awful that I would prefer a Tui even if I could get a Heineken for the same price. Hmmm...it must be almost 5:30 on a Friday afternoon...

And while off-topic, why is that Stella Artois is made in Auckland, but most pubs still list it in the "Imported" section, and charge accordingly?

While completely off topic...

Because Lion charge accordingly - RRP for a dozen Stella at a bottle store/supermarket is still around the $26 mark yet they are quite quite willing to discount the crap out of it at the moment because they have lost so much market share to DB since Heineken is so much stronger. Bar prices in NZ are an absolute rip off when you look at what they are paying for stuff, it's cheaper to drink in oz where all the fixed costs (labour, rent etc) are higher and the wholesale cost of the product is around 30% more since beer is taxed higher in Australia.

Joe_I_T: i still think GSM is Faster
Joe, being realistic here, you have to admint that WCDMA, with a max speed of 384kbps and average of 300kbps is slower than CDMA EVDO with max speed of 2.4Mbps and average of 600Kpbs.

The numbers can't lie. There's a physical speed limit that UMTS (WCDMA) won't go pass. The only real competition for CDMA EV-DO is when HSDPA is released here. Until then, sorry, but CDMA is faster.

By the way, "GSM" allows only CSD connections with a very slow 9.6kbps or 14.4kbps (depends on network). CSD connections are circuit switched, pretty much like a dial-up connection on a landline.

The upgrade to GSM is called GPRS, then EDGE (which is not deployed in New Zealand), then UMTS (WCDMA). These are all packet based connections.

Nope. Everyone can write here, providing they don't go beyond our policies. Everyone should know the policies before posting.

In any case, the final word is by the Administrator or moderators. These can delete or lock a thread. Administrators can also ban users and IP addresses.

These are the rules. Everyone plays by them.
