Jamms: The installers have just left our place after putting the box in and spending half an hour prodding at the same settings hoping it will update, apparently one of the servers is down again "bane of our existence" he said.

A question to those in the know!  What are these servers we hear so much about and what are they trying to do?  I just presumed that they would take one box out and put another box in!

There's lots of steps and rebooting and waiting. The guys are back and it's up and going now! Yay!

The devices need to be provisioned, and since it is not using Irdeto SMARTcard to verify the system, it will need to check with the network/server.

Thanks Chiefie - sorry for the noob question - but what is "provisioned" - and any reason why they have stopped using the SMARTcards?  It sounds like an easier way to install and use.

Using a smartcardless system makes it easier to manage and also helps with obtaining rights to content and programming. Using a smart card is so 2002. :-)

Provisioning isn't new with TCL.. they've done it with their cable modem, as well as their ADB digital tv STB, even with smartcard.

Personally I like the smartcard-less system. The kids seemed to enjoy pulling the smartcard out 1cm (just enough so it couldn't see it). Nothing just as enjoyable as recording a program of "Smartcard not found" :)

After waiting all Thursday morning for the my installer, then having it rescheduled to the afternoon, waiting all afternoon, then having it rescheduled to Friday afternoon, waiting all afternoon, getting no answer when my install would happen, they told me this morning that my install will be Tuesday the 12th. Sigh.

Good luck.

I gave up after waiting 4 days.

I know you're not happy, and went elsewhere, but give them a break mate.  It's only been released for 10 days.  Sure they have some teething troubles. Sh#t happens.  If it's still this bad after a month, then you might be justified in heaping scorn on them.  But for now I think they are allowed some slack.
