sbiddle:
pwner: If it isnt Mimo then it must be dual carrier, which is really cool and a feature of 3GPP Rel8. But the fact is that there is not likely to be any handsets and very few dongles that support this.
Maybe why Vodafone were complaining about the fact we follow APAC frequencies and not that of the states or the Eu.

Their dual carrier?sites has been live for ~6 weeks across large parts of their network.

What do you mean by Large?

I actually meant to say large parts of their network in Wellington. Smile

I've been getting variable speeds lately too (more variable than it used to be at least).

Previously I had decent signal all the way down from 1 bar up to full bars on my iPhone 4 (around 1Mbit down and up).

However now I sometimes get great speeds when reception is good, but I can also get speeds as slow as 20Kbit/s if I test in the same place a few minutes later.  This also happens in low reception areas.

This morning I did a test in Hamilton Te Rapa at just after 9 am . 4381 kbps down and up 1675 up. This at least 1 mbps more than previous test.
Later in the morning (1115)I was in Huntly walking around Lake Hakanoa I was able to get 2872kbps down and up 1665 down.
Later at 1245 in Nguarwahia I got 2649 down and 1567 up
A definite improvement in the city and out in the more rural areas
I should add this is on an Iphone 4

I have mapped some speedtests at: http://bit.ly/vfchchspeedtest for Christchurch.
Speeds do indeed jump to about ~3.9mbit down on some occasions, but then drop back very quickly.

This was done on my Samsung Galaxy S with no background apps running.

Rotorua's been pretty good since the VF team did some work here in Rotorua earlier this year - I've been getting 3+mbps.

However I had an all day meeting yesterday offsite and was getting over 4mbps so all looking good for Vodafone.

Took GPS Co-ords of all the speedtests, and then shoved them into a map, didn't take long.

Interesting but kind of a waste of data as the speeds will change standing in one place depending on how many other users around you are using data when you are doing your speedtest

That being said turning your phone around etc will also change the speed. in most cases the antenna is in the bottom of the phone near the mic. so if you want the best results its usually best to point the bottom of your phone at the nearest cell site. you can find that using helpful apps like Layar with the NZ Cell sites data from Johnathan Hall.

Speed tests are never a good measure of a network or user experience for mobile or broadband connections for that very reason, things will always change depending upon the conditions at that exact moment in time.

I did this at Cathedral Square since there's a Vodafone SIte on top of the building there, this was done early in the morning with hardly any people around. I am going to keep adding to that map - stay tuned.
