Well done telstraclear, we're doing your software testing and paying a few hundred a month for the privilege!

-Not targetted at the Telstraclear people monitoring these forums, I really do appreciate your comments and I see that you are trying to help, but overall the experience isn't that great.

KiwiNZ, I do wonder if there are non-technical people using the box in your household? This is a technical forum and most of us understand the concept that nothing's perfect, but this box is not in beta testing anymore and as we're paying big bucks for it, I'd expect more.

For most people, this is just a box to watch tv - it should just work, like the TV has worked for decades now...

I totally agree - we're meant to be the customers, not the testers.

Fog: Mado1, I agree with all that you have said. If I had to reboot our t/box weekly I would not be keeping it. It should not require all that rebooting, it is not a computer as such, and even if it was, you should not have to reboot all that often anyway.
As far as I am aware, this decoder has been on the market for two years and all the problems should have been fixed long ago.

It is an appliance computer, if you saw inside it you would see that it is the same as most small form factor PC's.

CPU
GPU
Hard disk
Sound chips
Memory

It runs a hybrid Linux OS.

As many of us can attest to weekly (or more) rebooting seems to make no difference. My system froze up at least 3 times in 48 hours and I rebooted the whole thing yet it still happened. I think you are just one of the few lucky ones KiwiNZ and I hope you manage to stay that way and do not have to put up with what the rest of us are putting up with. And as others have pointed out even if regular rebooting did help why should we have to do it and if it did help then why wouldn't Telstra tell us to do this? Anyway in my experience rebooting does not stop the problems from reoccuring.

Although I agree that technically it is a computer - it is however a consumer appliance, and as such, Fog is correct.   It should not require all that rebooting.  Unfortunately, even given the constant efforts by TCL staff on this forum to help out, it is not really fit for purpose as a consumer appliance.  This probably explains TCLs reluctance to put a link on their site to the T-BOX help page.  That would not be good advertising to perspective customers.

Yes, it is an appliance.

My TV has all the above except for a hard disk, I don't have to reboot it.  My car has a CPU, Memory and a bunch of sensors, I don't have to reboot it either.

Your TV probably does not run 24x7. Your car does have chips etc but it is not an appliance PC, but ant=y car needs regular maintenance and again does not run 24x7.

I am not here to defend the T-Box, all I am doing is conveying my experiences with it and sharing some advice that may make user experience more enjoyable.

I didn't want to go there but.....

My Tivo is an appliance PC that runs 24x7 and does not need to be rebooted, my Sony HDD recorder also runs 24x7 and does not need to be rebooted.

The parts of my car that are CPU, memory and sensors run 24x7 and they do not require any regular maintenance.  The fact that they are not based on a PC architecture is irrelevant, they are an appliance in just the same way as a T-Box and just work.

If you want to go further then I'll add in my home alarm system as another example.

I'll put in a more appropriate example.

My MySky has never needed to be rebooted, nor has my personal Dreambox PVR (well every few months or so, but normally after I have been messing around with it, it's been running now for 5+ months without a reboot)...

They all do the same function as the T-Box... but never need to be rebooted like all decent consumer devices.

Regardless of if it needs rebooting or not - rebooting on a regular basis does NOT stop the problems from happening,. I think the fact KiwiNZ does not have problems is purely luck. He is the only person I have heard of who has never had a problem (and I am not talking just about on here - I have several friends/co-workers who have a T-Box and also have problems).

That said again people can try my 'work around' or chose to ignore it and go on frustrated, I don't care.

Oh and the archietecture of the prosessing chips in your car is relevent to this.

Architecture is irrelevant, what matters here is function.  The T-box is an appliance and should not need to be rebooted (except perhaps for upgrades and other maintenance).  Period.

Yes and as a geek I found this interesting (maybe someone will be able to get root and install sky on linux or something else).

As a consumer though, I don't give a s*** - I just want it to work and watch TV with it. Ask non-technical people if they care that the tbox is running linux...

I have to reboot my T-Box about three times a week.

It's either:

1. Losing EPG

2. Locks up when a recording event finishes

3. Locks up during the night, even when there's no recording event

Or like last night:

4. Locks up when I press play on a previously half-viewed recording

Also, most days I have to stop and resume replays because it starts pixelating or periodically freezing

This sounds similar to something I had yesterday and it was a new problem - to me anyway.  I went to watch something I had recorded last week and it said recorded not "part recorded" or "failed" but when I hit play all I got was a black screen.  I was not able to fast forward or stop or exit - the only thing I could do was hit the off button on the remote and then switch it on again.  I tried about 3 times and had the exact same result.
