This sounds similar to something I had yesterday and it was a new problem - to me anyway.  I went to watch something I had recorded last week and it said recorded not "part recorded" or "failed" but when I hit play all I got was a black screen.  I was not able to fast forward or stop or exit - the only thing I could do was hit the off button on the remote and then switch it on again.  I tried about 3 times and had the exact same result.

Yeah, that's it Christine.  All I could do was hit the blue button and switch back on.  Could not FF.  When I pressed pause it showed the progress bar at zero but there was nothing else I could do.  Really annoyed as I was looking forward to watching it.  I have never seen a 'recorded' program fail like that before.

Hi kharris and Christine NZL.

We haven't seen this behaviour before.

You could try power-cycling (unplugging the power, wait a few minutes and plug back in) the modem and the T-Box. Once the T-Box has fully restarted, try viewing again.

If the recording still shows only a black screen, please let us know:

  • Date
  • Channel
  • Start and end times
  • Programme name
  • Programme duration (press 'i' to find this)
  • Duration shown during playback (pause the recording and let us know what the total duration reported there is)
Even if the power-cycling does work, we'd appreciate knowing the info noted above so we can try and recreate the behaviour.

Thanks, Gary

Unfortunately I have deleted the programme.  The T-Box had been power cycled the day before I tried to view it so don't think it would have made any difference.

From memory I had recorded 4 on Monday 19th September from 8.30 pm to 9.30 pm.  I didn't press "i" or pause so can't tell you what they said sorry.

Gary I also meant to tell you that I had a re-occurence of the problem with the picture jumping and having the lines running through it that I mentioned some time ago.  As suggested by you rather than power-cycling I unplugged the HDMI cable for a bit and plugged it back in and the picture was fine.  I was recording another channel at the same time the screen problems happened but when I viewed the recorded programme the picture was fine so I am assuming this is a HDMI cable problem and not a T-Box problem?

Hi Gary,

I have deleted the recording now, but I tried that first..... I power cycled everything.... pressed every button possible, but nothing.

I am a professional software tester, and really wanted to see this so please trust when I say I tried it all.  Even unplugged HDMI.  I even left it "playing" for 10 minutes, but pressing pause still showed zero on the progress bar.  No way to FF or to stop short of pressing the power off on the remote and back on.

The program was the Live All Black vs France Test on SS1 on Saturday night.  All other programming around this recorded fine including Sky's RWC build up show just prior.

Very annoyed.....

Hi Christine,

Thanks for the info on the blank recording. I'll pass that one. The info is appreciated. It does sound like the other issue was due to HDMI. Sometimes, changing the TV input from HDMI to AV (or something else) and back to HDMI will also force the TV to re-establish HDMI contact. The software developers are already working on changes to the HDMI now and that should help solve the problems that some TVs have talking to the T-Box.

Watching a recording of Masterchef tonight while recording it live too. Watched recording ended, we changed to 3 News live while live Masterchef recording continued into the extra time to allow for programme delay. Tbox locked up during this time. Message in Planner (for Masterchef recording) is Part Recorded. Is this a clue?

This is the well known and common end-of-recording crash.   Despite it saying "part recorded", you should find that the whole program is there.  The crash seems to happen between when the recording finishes and it updates its "recorded programmes" data. So when it restarts it thinks that the program didn't complete properly.

Hi again Gary

I hve just found that I didn't delete the programme.  The programme I deleted was one that only played for about 5 seconds before stopping (it was supposed to be a 55 minute programme and I mentioned this here on the 19th).

So the programme that gives me a black screen details:

19 Sept
Prime
Start 8.30 pm end 9.30 pm
Programme duration according to "i" 60 minutes
During playback I can not pause the programme despite leaving the black screen running for a while.  The only thing I can do is turn the T-Box off using the remote.

Hi Christine. That's really useful info - thanks. It would be useful for the broadcast team to, if they can, have a look at the T-Box as this is something that's not been seen before. I've sent you an email with some more information.

We have been having trouble with our main (lounge) T-Box over the last couple of days, We have had many failed recording, probably more than successful recordings. As far as we know it was not because of conflicting recordings. This afternoon I rebooted the decoder and so far have not seen any failures, but our scheduled recordings did have 4 overlapping set - Fair Go TV1 7:30pm - 8:00pm, Lie To Me Prime 7:30pm - 8:30pm, Hot in Cleveland TV2 8:00pm to 8:30pm and Strictly Come Dancing (not me) UKTV 7:40pm - 9:40pm. These were all series linked. I presume that if we had left it like that then the Dancing would have failed.

I have wondered about when we schedule a new series link, and what if we have conflicting recordings? My good lady suggests she has seen a message about that when setting a new series link but I don't think I have. I still don't understand how we got 3 overlapping tonight. I did cancel Lie To Me and transferred that recording to the other T-Box.

In the time it has taken me to type this, Fair Go has successfully finished.

Something new has been happening to me since the last release.  When I get to the end of watching a recorded program, it just stops (freeze frames) on the last frame.  At that point I have to press the planner or EPG buttons to get out of it.  If I go back to the Planner the program is listed as "Playing".

It doesn't happen every time - just around half the time.

Has anyone else seen this?

Happens on most recordings to me - doesn't fall back to planner by itself (which think is good) but stop button doesn't work.

Would be nice to maybe have a screen prompt telling you END or something...

Ongoing issues:

Last frame freezing and heavy pixellation on recorded / live TV sometimes (mainly during TV3 news and sometimes TV1 news). I understand the next patch release may address this issue. Changing channel etc partly fixes issue so again it may be a video buffer problem.

Playback freezing and remaining playing even when bounced back to Planner.

Wrong channel recording - 26th & 27th Sept recording of 3 News at 6pm and 27th Sept NCIS: LA at 9:30pm actually records Sky Sport1 - a channel package which we don't subscribe to and a channel we can't select. FYI. I record the 6pm TV1 and TV3 news every night and issue doesn't always happen.

About to reboot my T-box again now.
